## Question

Write a short note on the smart grid system. Describe the principle characteristics of smart grid system.

## Short answer

A smart grid is a digitally-enabled electricity network that enables two-way power and data flow for improved reliability and integration of renewables. Key characteristics include smart meters for real-time usage, self-healing fault detection, demand response, distributed generation with net metering, and reduced losses.

## Answer

A **smart grid** is a modern electricity network that uses digital communication, sensors, automation and information technology to monitor and control the flow of electricity and information between suppliers and consumers in both directions, to improve reliability, efficiency and sustainability.

```text
 Generation --> Transmission --> Distribution --> Consumers
 (incl. solar,     sensors/PMU      smart meters     (prosumers)
  wind) <======= Two-way power and data ===========>
              Control centre (SCADA, AI, analytics)
```

#### Principal characteristics
1. **Two-way communication** of power and data between utility and consumer.
2. **Smart meters / advanced metering infrastructure (AMI):** real-time usage and time-of-use tariffs; remote reading.
3. **Self-healing and automation:** detects faults and isolates them, quickly restoring supply (fewer outages).
4. **Integration of renewable and distributed generation:** rooftop solar, wind, batteries and EVs; consumers can also sell power (prosumers, net metering).
5. **Demand response and load management:** consumers shift use away from peak hours, which reduces peak demand.
6. **Efficiency and lower losses:** better monitoring reduces technical and commercial losses and theft.
7. **Cyber-security and data privacy.**
8. **Energy storage and EV integration (vehicle-to-grid).**
9. **Better power quality and resilience** with wide-area monitoring (PMU).

#### Relevance to Nepal
NEA is installing smart meters and SCADA, and has plans for grid modernisation, which helps loss reduction, regional power trade and integration of solar and hydropower.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What distinguishes a smart grid from a conventional grid?
   A. One-way flow of power only
   B. No communication
   C. Only larger generators
   D. Two-way flow of power and data using digital communication and sensors
   Answer: D. Smart grids monitor and control flow between suppliers and consumers in both directions. (Key point: Definition)

2. What does self-healing mean in a smart grid?
   A. Detecting and isolating faults and restoring supply quickly
   B. Repairing wires physically without crews
   C. Generating more power
   D. Increasing tariffs
   Answer: A. It reduces outages through automation. (Key point: Self-healing)

3. What is demand response?
   A. Utility increases peak demand
   B. Consumers shift use away from peak hours, reducing peak demand
   C. Consumers stop paying
   D. Generators increase peak
   Answer: B. Time-of-use tariffs from smart meters encourage this. (Key point: Demand response)

4. What is a prosumer?
   A. A consumer with no meter
   B. A generator with no customers
   C. A consumer who also generates and sells power, e.g. rooftop solar with net metering
   D. A cyber-security expert
   Answer: C. Smart grids integrate distributed generation. (Key point: Prosumer)
