## Question

What are the environmental impacts of wind machine?

## Short answer

Wind machines cause noise, visual impact, bird/bat collisions, land disturbance, shadow flicker, and electromagnetic interference. Manufacturing and blade disposal also have impacts. Mitigation includes proper siting, EIA, distance from homes, and bird curtailment; operational emissions are zero.

## Answer

Wind power produces no emissions during operation, but wind machines still have environmental impacts.

#### Negative impacts
1. **Noise:** aerodynamic noise from blades and mechanical noise from the gearbox, which can disturb nearby residents (typically 40–50 dB at 300 m).
2. **Visual impact:** large turbines change the landscape, important in scenic and tourist areas such as Mustang.
3. **Birds and bats:** collision with rotating blades and loss of habitat; bird migration routes should be checked.
4. **Land use and habitat disturbance:** roads, foundations and transmission lines; erosion, vegetation loss in hilly areas.
5. **Shadow flicker** and **blade glint:** moving shadows through windows.
6. **Electromagnetic interference** with TV, radio and radar signals.
7. **Safety:** blade throw, ice throw, tower fire.
8. **Manufacturing and disposal:** energy for steel, concrete and blades; blade waste (fibreglass is difficult to recycle).
9. **Offshore:** effect on marine life during construction.

#### Positive/mitigation
- Zero operational CO₂, SO₂ and water use.
- Mitigation by proper siting (EIA), distance from homes, slow-rotating large turbines, bird radar and curtailment, careful road design and rehabilitation of land.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the impact of wind machines on birds and bats?
   A. Poisoning by exhaust
   B. Collision with rotating blades and habitat loss
   C. Acid rain
   D. Warming of habitat
Answer: B. Bird migration routes should be checked before siting. (Key point: Birds)

2. What is shadow flicker?
   A. Noise from the gearbox
   B. Radio signal interference
   C. Moving shadows of rotating blades cast through windows
   D. Blade fragments thrown off
Answer: C. It is a visual nuisance along with blade glint. (Key point: Shadow flicker)

3. Which statement is correct about wind power emissions?
   A. It emits SO2 during operation
   B. It consumes much water in operation
   C. It has no impacts of any kind
   D. It has zero operational CO2 and SO2, but manufacturing and blade waste have impacts
Answer: D. Operational emissions are zero, but steel, concrete and fibreglass blades have impacts. (Key point: Operational emissions)

4. Which is a mitigation measure?
   A. Proper siting with EIA and distance from homes
   B. Placing turbines on migration routes
   C. Using faster-rotating small turbines
   D. Ignoring road design
Answer: A. Siting, slow large turbines, bird radar and curtailment reduce impacts. (Key point: Mitigation)
