## Question

Estimate the quantities of the following items of work from the accompanying BUILDING drawings.
i) Lime concrete in foundation
ii) Brick work in second footing
iii) DOOR shutters
iv) 25 mm thick DPC
[Drawing not included in the scanned paper]

## Short answer

Lime concrete in foundation: 4.30 m3. Brickwork in second footing: 1.10 m3. Two door shutters total: 3.24 m2. DPC 25 mm thick, net wall length after door deduction: 3.22 m2.

## Answer

No drawing is given, so a typical room is assumed: 4.5 m × 3.0 m clear, 230 mm walls; centre-line length = 2(4.5 + 3.0 + 0.46) = 15.92 m. Foundation: trench 0.90 m wide; **lime concrete** 0.30 m thick; brick footings of 0.69 m (first) and 0.46 m (second), 0.15 m high each; DPC at plinth. Doors: D1 1.0 × 2.1 m, D2 0.9 × 2.1 m; two windows 1.2 × 1.2 m. Door frame 75 mm.

#### i) Lime concrete in foundation
| Item | No. | L (m) | B (m) | H/D (m) | Qty (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lime concrete bed 0.90 wide × 0.30 thick | 1 | 15.920 | 0.900 | 0.300 | 4.298 |
| **Total** | | | | | **4.298** |

#### ii) Brickwork in second footing
| Item | No. | L (m) | B (m) | H/D (m) | Qty (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Second footing 0.46 × 0.15 | 1 | 15.920 | 0.460 | 0.150 | 1.098 |
| **Total** | | | | | **1.098** |

#### iii) Door shutters
| Item | No. | L (m) | B (m) | H/D (m) | Qty (m²) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Door D1 shutter (1.0−0.15)×(2.1−0.075) | 1 | 0.850 | 2.025 | – | 1.721 |
| Door D2 shutter (0.9−0.15)×(2.1−0.075) | 1 | 0.750 | 2.025 | – | 1.519 |
| **Total** | | | | | **3.240** |

#### iv) 25 mm thick DPC
Measured in m² (length of wall × thickness of wall), not across door openings.

| Item | No. | L (m) | B (m) | H/D (m) | Qty (m²) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DPC 25 mm, wall length | 1 | 15.920 | 0.230 | – | 3.662 |
| Deduct door openings (1.0 + 0.9) | -1 | 1.900 | 0.230 | – | -0.437 |
| **Total** | | | | | **3.225** |

**Answer:** Lime concrete 4.30 m³; second-footing brickwork 1.10 m³; door shutters 3.24 m²; DPC 3.22 m² (assumed dimensions).

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How is the lime concrete in foundation of 4.298 m3 calculated?
   A. 15.92 m x 0.69 m x 0.15 m
   B. Centre-line 15.92 m x width 0.90 m x thickness 0.30 m
   C. 15.92 m x 0.90 m x 1.00 m
   D. 15.92 m x 0.23 m x 0.30 m
Answer: B. The bed is as wide as the trench (0.90 m) and 0.30 m thick, running along the whole centre-line. (Key point: Lime concrete volume)

2. How is a 25 mm thick DPC measured in this answer?
   A. In m2, as wall length x wall thickness
   B. In m3, as wall length x thickness x 25 mm
   C. In running metres of wall length
   D. In m2, as wall length x 25 mm
Answer: A. A DPC is a layer across the full wall thickness, so its quantity is an area, length x 0.23 m; the 25 mm is a specification. (Key point: DPC measurement)

3. Why are the door openings (1.0 + 0.9 m) deducted from the DPC?
   A. Doors are made of damp-proof material
   B. The door frames replace the DPC with timber
   C. DPC is not provided across door openings
   D. The DPC would be too thin at the doors
Answer: C. The DPC lies at plinth level in the wall; where a doorway interrupts the wall, no DPC is laid. (Key point: DPC at openings)

4. What is the shutter area of door D1 (1.0 x 2.1 m, frame 75 mm)?
   A. (1.0 - 0.15) x (2.1 - 0.075) = 1.721 m2
   B. 1.0 x 2.1 = 2.10 m2
   C. (1.0 - 0.075) x (2.1 - 0.15) = 1.80 m2
   D. (1.0 - 0.15) x (2.1 - 0.15) = 1.66 m2
Answer: A. Frame takes 75 mm each side and 75 mm at the head: 0.85 x 2.025 = 1.721 m2. (Key point: Door shutter area)
