## Question

Estimate the quantity of the following items of work from the accompanying building drawings:
i) PCC (1:3:6) in foundation
ii) Brick work in (1:6) cement mortar in foundation and plinth.
iii) Salwood work for doors and windows frame
iv) PCC M20 for R.C.C. slab
[Drawing not included in the scanned paper]

## Short answer

Assuming a 4.0 × 3.5 m clear room with 230 mm walls: PCC in foundation 2.87 m³, brickwork in foundation and plinth 6.22 m³, salwood door/window frames 0.111 m³, and M20 RCC slab including projection 3.26 m³.

## Answer

No drawing is given. Assumed: room 4.0 m × 3.5 m clear, 230 mm walls, centre-line length 15.92 m; trench 0.90 m wide × 1.00 m deep; PCC 200 mm; brick steps 0.69 and 0.46 m wide (150 mm each); plinth 0.45 m above GL; door 1.0 × 2.1, two windows 1.2 × 1.2; frames 100 × 75 mm sal; RCC slab 125 mm thick with 0.45 m projection all round (M20).

#### i) PCC (1:3:6) in foundation
| Item | No. | L (m) | B (m) | H/D (m) | Qty (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PCC 1:3:6 under walls 0.90 × 0.20 | 1 | 15.920 | 0.900 | 0.200 | 2.866 |
| **Total** | | | | | **2.866** |

#### ii) Brickwork (1:6) in foundation and plinth
Wall height from the last step = 0.95 m.

| Item | No. | L (m) | B (m) | H/D (m) | Qty (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brick footing step 1 (0.69 m wide) | 1 | 15.920 | 0.690 | 0.150 | 1.648 |
| Brick footing step 2 (0.46 m wide) | 1 | 15.920 | 0.460 | 0.150 | 1.098 |
| Wall up to plinth | 1 | 15.920 | 0.230 | 0.950 | 3.479 |
| **Total** | | | | | **6.225** |

#### iii) Sal wood for door and window frames
| Frame | No. | L (m) | B (m) | H/D (m) | Qty (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Door frame D (2×2.1 + 1.0) | 1 | 5.200 | 0.100 | 0.075 | 0.0390 |
| Window frame W (2×1.2 + 2×1.2) | 2 | 4.800 | 0.100 | 0.075 | 0.0720 |
| **Total** | | | | | **0.1110** |

#### iv) PCC M20 for RCC slab
| Item | No. | L (m) | B (m) | H/D (m) | Qty (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RCC slab 125 mm incl. 0.45 m projection: (4.0+0.46+0.90) × (3.5+0.46+0.90) | 1 | 5.360 | 4.860 | 0.125 | 3.256 |
| **Total** | | | | | **3.256** |

(Lintels, beams and reinforcement are measured separately.)

**Answer:** PCC 2.87 m³; brickwork 6.22 m³; sal wood frames 0.111 m³; M20 concrete in slab 3.26 m³.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How is PCC under walls (2.866 m3) found?
   A. Centre-line 15.92 m x trench width 0.90 m x PCC thickness 0.20 m
   B. 15.92 m x 0.23 m x 0.20 m
   C. 15.92 m x 0.90 m x 1.00 m
   D. 15.92 m x 0.69 m x 0.15 m
Answer: A. PCC fills the trench width at the bottom for a thickness of 0.20 m along the full centre-line. (Key point: PCC volume)

2. Trench 1.00 m, PCC 0.20 m, two steps of 0.15 m, plinth 0.45 m above GL. What is the wall height?
   A. 0.50 m
   B. 1.45 m
   C. 0.95 m
   D. 0.65 m
   Answer: C. 1.00 - 0.20 - 0.15 - 0.15 = 0.50 m below ground, plus 0.45 m = 0.95 m. (Key point: Wall height from last step)

3. Why is the slab length taken as 4.0 + 0.46 + 0.90 = 5.36 m?
   A. Clear length plus one wall thickness plus one projection
   B. Clear length plus two wall thicknesses plus 0.45 m projection on each side
   C. Clear length plus the footing widths
   D. Clear length plus 0.90 m of beam width
Answer: B. The slab spans over the walls (0.46 m total) and extends 0.45 m beyond both outer faces (0.90 m total). (Key point: Slab dimension)

4. What is stated to be measured separately from the 3.256 m3 slab concrete?
   A. Lintels, beams and reinforcement
   B. Plaster and painting only
   C. The slab thickness
   D. The roof projection
Answer: A. The slab quantity includes only the slab concrete; lintels, beams and steel are separate items. (Key point: Items measured separately)
