## Question

Briefly describe the components of the detail estimation report with their format for a road project.

## Short answer

A road estimate report includes title/summary, introduction, design data, drawings, quantity sheets, rate analysis, abstract of cost, specifications, work programme and conclusion. The abstract format lists item, unit, quantity, rate and amount, then adds contingency, supervision and VAT.

## Answer

The detailed estimate report of a road project tells the approving authority what is to be built, how much it costs and on what basis. It has the following components.

| S.N. | Component | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Title and summary | Name of road, location, length, total cost, standard (NRS 2070 class) |
| 2 | Introduction | Objective, benefited population, traffic, climate, terrain, access |
| 3 | Design data | Geometric design (width, gradient, curves), pavement design (CBR, traffic), drainage design |
| 4 | Drawings | Plan, longitudinal profile, typical cross-sections, drawings of structures |
| 5 | Quantity sheets | Item-wise measurement: earthwork (chainage-wise), pavement, drains, culverts, retaining walls |
| 6 | Rate analysis | Basis of rates, norms, lead and lift, transport, overhead, profit |
| 7 | Abstract of cost | Item, quantity, unit, rate, amount; total with contingency, supervision, VAT |
| 8 | Specifications | Material and workmanship standards |
| 9 | Work programme | Construction schedule, equipment and manpower |
| 10 | Conclusion | Recommendation and approval request |

**Format of the abstract of cost:**

| S.N. | Description of item | Unit | Quantity | Rate (NPR) | Amount (NPR) |
|---|---|---|---:|---:|---:|
| 1 | Clearing and grubbing | m² | - | - | - |
| 2 | Earthwork in cutting/filling | m³ | - | - | - |
| 3 | Sub-base and base course | m³ | - | - | - |
| 4 | Wearing course | m² | - | - | - |
| 5 | Drains and culverts | m | - | - | - |
| | Total, contingency, supervision, VAT | | | | |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which columns does the abstract of cost format have?
   A. Name, age, address
   B. S.N., description of item, unit, quantity, rate, amount
   C. Chainage, level, offset
   D. Date, weather, labourer count
Answer: B. Quantity x rate gives amount. (Key point: Abstract of cost)

2. How are earthwork quantity sheets arranged?
   A. By contractor name
   B. By month of work
   C. Item-wise, with earthwork chainage-wise
   D. By length of the vehicle
Answer: C. Chainage-wise measurement fits the road length. (Key point: Quantity sheets)

3. What does the design data component contain?
   A. Contractor's profit
   B. Rates of labour
   C. Tender conditions
   D. Geometric design, pavement design (CBR, traffic) and drainage design
Answer: D. It is the basis for the drawings and quantities. (Key point: Design data)
