## Question

Prepare rate analysis for 10 m³ of brickwork in (1:4) cement sand mortar in superstructure. Take brick size: 230 × 110 × 55 mm and mortar joint thickness: 10 mm.

## Short answer

For 10 m³ 1:4 brickwork superstructure: bricks 5609 nos., cement 19.22 bags, sand 2.67 m³, mason 16 md, labourer 22 md. Direct cost Rs 147,108, plus 15% overhead/profit gives Rs 169,174.20, i.e. Rs 16,917.42 per m³, excluding VAT.

## Answer

#### Mortar and brick quantities for 10 m³
Brick with mortar: $240 \times 120 \times 65$ mm (10 mm joints).
- Number of bricks per m³ = $\dfrac{1}{0.24 \times 0.12 \times 0.065} = 534.19$; for 10 m³ = 5341.88 nos. (net). Add 5% breakage: 5609 nos.
- Volume of bricks alone = 5341.88 x 0.23 x 0.11 x 0.055 = 7.433 m³.
- Wet mortar = 10 - 7.433 = 2.567 m³.
- Dry mortar = 2.567 x 1.30 = 3.337 m³ (1.30 allows for voids in sand and loss).
- For 1:4: cement = 3.337/5 = 0.6674 m³ x 1,440 = 961.0 kg = 19.22 bags; sand = 3.337 x 4/5 = 2.669 m³.

#### Analysis for 10 m³ (rates illustrative; labour norms assumed in DUDBC style)
| Description | Qty | Unit | Rate (Rs) | Amount (Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st class bricks (230x110x55), net 5,341.88 + 5% wastage | 5609 | nos. | 15.00 | 84,135.00 |
| Cement (0.6674 m³) | 19.22 | bag | 900.00 | 17,298.00 |
| Sand (2.669 m³) | 2.67 | m³ | 2,500.00 | 6,675.00 |
| Mason (skilled) | 16 | md | 1,200.00 | 19,200.00 |
| Helper / labourer (unskilled) | 22 | md | 900.00 | 19,800.00 |
| **Sub-total** | | | | **147,108.00** |
| Contractor's overhead and profit | 15% | | | 22,066.20 |
| **Total for 10 m³** | | | | **169,174.20** |

**Answer: Cost of 10 m³ of 1:4 brickwork in superstructure = Rs 169,174.20, i.e. Rs 16,917.42 per m³** (excluding VAT).
