## Question

Prepare rate analysis of 25 mm thick premix carpeting per m².

## Short answer

Per m² of 25 mm premix carpet: loose chips 0.0312 m³, premix bitumen 1.75 kg, tack coat 0.25 kg, seal coat binder 0.73 kg and chips 0.009 m³. Adding heating, plant, labour, 15% overhead and 10% profit gives rate NPR 865.32 per m².

## Answer

Premix carpet is a 20–25 mm layer of pre-coated stone chips mixed with bitumen, laid hot and rolled, followed by a seal coat. Illustrative rates: stone chips NPR 4,500/m³, bitumen NPR 95/kg, labour NPR 1,500 and NPR 1,100 per day, overhead 15%, profit 10%.

#### Quantities per m² (IRC-type values, assumed)

- Loose chips for premix $= 0.025 \times 1.25 = 0.0312$ m³ (1.25 for compaction)
- Bitumen in premix $= 1.75$ kg; tack coat $= 0.25$ kg; seal coat binder $= 0.73$ kg and seal chips $= 0.009$ m³
- Labour and roller as shown

#### Analysis

| Item | Qty | Unit | Rate (NPR) | Amount (NPR) |
|---|---:|---|---:|---:|
| Stone chips (13.2 mm and 11.2 mm), loose | 0.0312 | m³ | 4,500.00 | 140.40 |
| Bitumen for premix (1.75 kg/m²) | 1.75 | kg | 95.00 | 166.25 |
| Tack coat bitumen (0.25 kg/m²) | 0.25 | kg | 95.00 | 23.75 |
| Seal coat bitumen (0.73 kg/m²) | 0.73 | kg | 95.00 | 69.35 |
| Seal coat chips (0.009 m³/m²) | 0.0090 | m³ | 4,500.00 | 40.50 |
| Heating bitumen, mixing, plant and roller (lump) | 1 | LS | 45.00 | 45.00 |
| Skilled labour | 0.05 | day | 1,500.00 | 75.00 |
| Unskilled labour | 0.12 | day | 1,100.00 | 132.00 |
| **Direct cost** | | | | **692.25** |
| Contractor's overhead @ 15% | | | | 103.84 |
| Contractor's profit @ 10% | | | | 69.23 |
| **Total (rate per m²)** | | | | **865.32** |

**Rate = NPR 865.32 per m².**

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Loose chips per m^2?
   A. 0.025 m^3
   B. 0.0325 m^3 by 1.30
   C. 0.025 x 1.25 = 0.0312 m^3
   D. 0.0312 m^3 plus 0.009
Answer: C. 1.25 allows for compaction. (Key point: Loose chips)

2. Bitumen items?
   A. Only 1.75 kg
   B. Premix 1.75 kg, tack 0.25 kg, seal 0.73 kg
   C. 0.25 kg only
   D. 3 kg premix only
Answer: B. Three bitumen items. (Key point: Binders)

3. Seal coat has?
   A. Binder plus chips 0.009 m^3
   B. No chips
   C. Only labour
   D. Water only
Answer: A. Seal coat follows carpet. (Key point: Seal coat)

4. Rate per m^2?
   A. NPR 692.25
   B. NPR 8,653
   C. NPR 86.53
   D. NPR 865.32
   Answer: D. 692.25 + 15% + 10%. (Key point: Rate)
