## Question

Prepare an analysis of rate for providing, laying and consolidation of 40 mm thick premix asphalt carpeting per m².

## Short answer

For 100 m², aggregate 5.43 m³, bitumen 531 kg, labour, fuel and roller give sub-total Rs 102,315; add 15% overhead/profit gives Rs 117,662.25, so the rate is Rs 1,176.62 per m² excluding VAT.

## Answer

#### Basis
Rate for **providing, laying and consolidating 40 mm thick premix asphalt carpeting**, worked out for **100 m²** and then divided to give the rate per m². Quantities follow the usual DUDBC / DoR (Department of Roads) practice; rates are **illustrative**.

Assumptions:
- Density of compacted mix = 2,300 kg/m³, so mass per m² = 0.04 x 2,300 = 92 kg.
- Bitumen content 5.5% of the mix = 5.06 kg/m² (plus 0.25 kg/m² for the tack coat on the base); aggregate = 86.94 kg/m², and a bulk density of loose aggregate of 1,600 kg/m³ gives 0.0543 m³/m².

#### Analysis (per 100 m²)
| Description | Qty | Unit | Rate (Rs) | Amount (Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aggregate (20 mm and 12 mm graded), loose | 5.43 | m³ | 3,500.00 | 19,005.00 |
| Bitumen 60/70 (5.06 kg/m² in the mix + 0.25 kg/m² tack coat) | 531 | kg | 110.00 | 58,410.00 |
| Labour: skilled (mixing, rakers) | 2 | md | 1,200.00 | 2,400.00 |
| Labour: unskilled | 15 | md | 900.00 | 13,500.00 |
| Fuel for heating and boiler | 1 | L.S. | 6,000.00 | 6,000.00 |
| Tools and equipment: 8-10 t roller (1 hr) | 1 | hr | 3,000.00 | 3,000.00 |
| **Sub-total** | | | | **102,315.00** |
| Contractor's overhead and profit | 15% | | | 15,347.25 |
| **Total per 100 m²** | | | | **117,662.25** |

**Answer: Rate = 117,662.25 / 100 = Rs 1,176.62 per m²** (excluding VAT).

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How is the mass of mix per m² found?
   A. 0.04 x 1,600 = 64 kg
   B. 0.04 x 100 = 4 kg
   C. 2,300/0.04 = 57,500 kg
   D. Thickness x density = 0.04 x 2,300 = 92 kg
Answer: D. Compacted density 2,300 kg/m³ times 0.04 m. (Key point: Mass per m²)

2. How much bitumen per m² does 5.5% of mix give?
   A. 5.06 kg/m²
   B. 0.55 kg/m²
   C. 50.6 kg/m²
   D. 92 kg/m²
   Answer: A. 0.055 x 92 = 5.06 kg. (Key point: Bitumen)

3. Why is the analysis done for 100 m²?
   A. Because the carpet is 100 mm thick
   B. To get workable quantities, then divide by 100 for the rate per m²
   C. Because VAT applies on 100 m²
   D. Because roller works 100 m² per hour exactly
Answer: B. The total for 100 m² divided by 100 gives the unit rate. (Key point: Basis of work)

4. How is the final rate obtained?
   A. 102,315/100 = 1,023.15 per m²
   B. 117,662.25 per m²
   C. 117,662.25/100 = Rs 1,176.62 per m² after 15% overhead and profit
   D. 117,662.25 x 100
   Answer: C. Sub-total 102,315 + 15% = 117,662.25 per 100 m². (Key point: Final rate)
