## Question

Prepare the analysis of rates for one metric ton of reinforcement. Labor norms per MT: skilled 12 no/m³/day, unskilled 12 no/m³/day. Assume suitable rates.

## Short answer

Rate per metric ton of reinforcement is NPR 169,050, including 1,030 kg steel (3% wastage), 8 kg binding wire, 12 skilled and 12 unskilled man-days, plus 15% overhead and 10% profit.

## Answer

The rate covers supplying, cutting, bending, placing and tying the steel bars as per drawing and bar-bending schedule, per metric tonne (MT). Rates are assumed: steel (Fe 500D) NPR 100/kg, binding wire NPR 130/kg, skilled labour NPR 1,500/day, unskilled NPR 1,100/day, overhead 15%, profit 10%. The labour norms are read as 12 skilled and 12 unskilled man-days per MT, as given.

#### Quantities per MT

- Steel $= 1000$ kg plus 3% for cutting waste and laps $= 1030$ kg
- Binding wire $= 8$ kg per MT (DUDBC-type norm)
- Skilled labour $= 12$ days; unskilled labour $= 12$ days

#### Analysis

| Item | Qty | Unit | Rate (NPR) | Amount (NPR) |
|---|---:|---|---:|---:|
| Reinforcement steel (1,000 kg + 3% cutting and lap wastage) | 1,030 | kg | 100.00 | 103,000.00 |
| Binding wire (annealed 16 gauge) | 8 | kg | 130.00 | 1,040.00 |
| Skilled labour (bar bender) | 12 | day | 1,500.00 | 18,000.00 |
| Unskilled labour | 12 | day | 1,100.00 | 13,200.00 |
| **Direct cost** | | | | **135,240.00** |
| Contractor's overhead @ 15% | | | | 20,286.00 |
| Contractor's profit @ 10% | | | | 13,524.00 |
| **Total (rate per MT)** | | | | **169,050.00** |

**Rate = NPR 169,050.00 per MT** (about NPR 169.05 per kg).

If the contract pays only for the steel in the drawing (as per bar-bending schedule), the wastage allowance is not paid separately but is included in the rate as above.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is 1,030 kg of steel priced for one tonne of reinforcement?
   A. 3% is added for rust
   B. 30 kg is binding wire
   C. 3% is the contractor's profit
   D. 3% is added for cutting waste and laps
Answer: D. 1,000 kg + 3% = 1,030 kg for cutting waste and laps. (Key point: Steel quantity)

2. How much binding wire is taken per MT?
   A. 80 kg
   B. 0.8 kg
   C. 8 kg
   D. 30 kg
Answer: C. The answer uses 8 kg per MT (DUDBC-type norm) at NPR 130/kg. (Key point: Binding wire)

3. How is the given labour norm read?
   A. 12 skilled man-days per m^3 of concrete
   B. 12 skilled and 12 unskilled man-days per MT
   C. 1.2 skilled and 12 unskilled days
   D. 12 days in total for both
Answer: B. The norm is taken as 12 skilled and 12 unskilled days per MT. (Key point: Labour norm)

4. How does the rate reach NPR 169,050 per MT?
   A. Direct cost 135,240 + 15% overhead + 10% profit
   B. 135,240 + 25% on labour only
   C. 135,240 + 13% VAT
   D. 103,000 + 15% overhead
   Answer: A. 135,240 + 20,286 + 13,524 = 169,050. (Key point: Rate build-up)
