## Question

Write down the unit of measurement and payment of the given items of works: i) Flooring works ii) Skirting iii) Railing works iv) Half brick walls.

## Short answer

Flooring is measured and paid in m² of net floor area; skirting in running metre along the wall with door deductions; railing in running metre along the top rail; half-brick wall in m² with openings deducted.

## Answer

| Item | Unit of measurement | Unit of payment | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| i) Flooring | m² | m² | Length x width of net floor area, thickness and type stated |
| ii) Skirting | m (running metre) | m | Height and thickness specified; measured along the wall, deducting door openings |
| iii) Railing | m (running metre) | m | Measured along the centre line of the top rail, with height and pattern given |
| iv) Half-brick wall | m² | m² | Thickness 115 mm; the area deducts openings larger than the limit in the rules |

In some DUDBC items skirting is also paid per m² by area of the finished strip; the unit stated in the item description governs.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the unit of flooring?
   A. m
   B. m³
   C. kg
   D. m²
Answer: D. Flooring is area work. (Key point: Flooring)

2. What is the usual unit for skirting and railing?
   A. Running metre
   B. Square metre
   C. Cubic metre
   D. Number
Answer: A. They are measured along their length. (Key point: Skirting and railing)

3. How is a half-brick wall (115 mm) measured?
   A. In m³
   B. In m², as thickness is fixed
   C. In running metre
   D. In kg
Answer: B. A fixed-thickness wall is measured by area. (Key point: Half-brick wall)
