## Question

Write down the unit of measurement and payment of the given items of works: i) Iron grills ii) Skirting iii) Formworks iv) Door window shutters.

## Short answer

Iron grills are measured in m² of grill area or kg by weight; skirting in running metre; formwork in m² of concrete contact surface; door and window shutters in m² of shutter area. Frames are measured separately.

## Answer

| Item | Unit of measurement | Unit of payment |
|---|---|---|
| i) Iron grills | m² of the grill area (frame included) or kg by weight | m² or kg, as per the item description |
| ii) Skirting | m (running metre), height and thickness specified | m |
| iii) Formwork | m² of the concrete surface in contact with the form | m² |
| iv) Door and window shutters | m² of shutter area, thickness specified | m² |

The measurement of the shutters is taken over the frame opening (rebate included), and the frames are measured separately in m³ or running metre.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How may iron grills be measured?
   A. In m² of area or kg by weight, as per the item description
   B. Only in m³
   C. Only in running metre
   D. Only in litres
Answer: A. Either m² or kg as the item states. (Key point: Iron grills)

2. Formwork is measured as
   A. m³ of concrete
   B. m² of concrete surface in contact with the form
   C. kg of timber
   D. Number of boards
Answer: B. Contact area is measured. (Key point: Formwork)

3. Shutters of doors and windows are measured in
   A. m³
   B. kg
   C. m² with thickness specified
   D. running metre
Answer: C. Frames are measured separately. (Key point: Shutters)
