## Question

Outline the challenges for hydropower development in Nepal. Discuss hydropotential in Nepal.

## Short answer

Key challenges: huge capital needs, remote sites with poor access and transmission, fragile geology with landslides and earthquakes, large seasonal flow variation and lack of storage, slow approvals, local disputes, and uncertain markets. Nepal's theoretical hydropower potential is about 83,000 MW, technical 45,000 MW and economic 42,000 MW, but currently only about 3,000 MW is developed.

## Answer

#### Challenges of hydropower development
- Large capital need and difficulty in reaching financial closure.
- Remote sites with poor road access and weak transmission lines.
- Fragile, young geology; landslides, floods, GLOFs and earthquakes.
- Large wet-dry flow difference and a lack of storage.
- Slow approvals, land acquisition, local disputes and political instability.
- Shortage of skilled manpower and construction delays.
- Uncertain power trade and market for the surplus.
- Environmental and social issues (resettlement, sediment, fish).

#### Hydropotential of Nepal
The potential is of three types:

| Type | Meaning | Nepal value |
|---|---|---|
| Gross (theoretical) | Total energy of all river flow with full head | about 83,000 MW |
| Technical | Part that can be built with present technology | about 45,000 MW |
| Economic | Part that is financially viable | about 42,000 MW |

- Nepal has more than 6,000 rivers and about 225 billion m³ of annual runoff, with a steep fall from the Himalaya to the Terai.
- The major basins are the Koshi, Gandaki (Narayani) and Karnali, plus the Mahakali. Together they contribute most of the potential: Karnali about 32,000 MW, Saptakoshi about 22,000 MW and Gandaki about 20,000 MW (gross).
- Installed capacity was only about 1,400 MW in 2020 and is now more than 3,000 MW (including Upper Tamakoshi, 456 MW), so most of the potential is still undeveloped.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which ordering of Nepal's potentials is correct?
   A. Gross 42,000, technical 45,000, economic 83,000
   B. All three are 83,000 MW
   C. Gross about 83,000 MW, technical about 45,000 MW, economic about 42,000 MW
   D. Gross 45,000, technical 83,000, economic 42,000
Answer: C. Each type is a subset of the previous one. (Key point: Types of potential)

2. What does economic potential mean?
   A. Part buildable with present technology
   B. Installed capacity
   C. Total energy of all flow with full head
   D. Part that is financially viable
Answer: D. Economic potential is the financially viable part. (Key point: Economic potential)

3. Why is a large wet-dry flow difference a challenge?
   A. It needs storage that Nepal lacks
   B. It increases dry-season output
   C. It floods only the Terai
   D. It reduces sediment
Answer: A. Dry-season shortage needs storage. (Key point: Flow challenge)

4. Which are the major river basins contributing the potential?
   A. Only Koshi
   B. Ganga, Yamuna and Indus
   C. Rapti and Bagmati only
   D. Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali and Mahakali
Answer: D. Karnali, Saptakoshi and Gandaki contribute most. (Key point: Major basins)
