## Question

Discuss the hydropower development cycle with a flow chart. Draw the layout plan and section of a storage hydel plant with power house.

## Short answer

A storage plant comprises a dam, spillway with gates, bottom outlet or diversion tunnel, intake tower with trash rack and gates, penstock through or around the dam, surface powerhouse at the dam toe, tailrace, and switchyard. Reservoir dead storage lies below MOL, live storage between MOL and FSL.

## Answer

#### Hydropower development cycle (flow chart)

- **Reconnaissance:** identify and rank sites using maps and site visits.
- **Pre-feasibility:** survey, hydrology and geology; alternatives compared.
- **Feasibility:** complete design, cost, benefits and environment study; decide on investment.
- **Detailed design:** drawings, specifications, tender.
- **Construction:** diversion, dam, waterways, powerhouse, equipment; commissioning.
- **Operation:** generation, maintenance, monitoring.

Components: dam, spillway with gates, bottom outlet / diversion tunnel, intake tower with trash rack and gates, penstock (through or around the dam), surface powerhouse at the dam toe, tailrace, switchyard. The reservoir is divided into dead storage (below MOL) and live storage (between MOL and FSL).

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. In the development cycle flow chart, what comes immediately after feasibility study?
   A. Operation and maintenance
   B. Pre-feasibility study
   C. Reconnaissance study
   D. Detailed design and tender
Answer: D. The sequence is reconnaissance, pre-feasibility, feasibility, detailed design and tender, construction, operation. (Key point: Flow chart order)

2. What is decided at the end of the feasibility study?
   A. The site ranking
   B. Whether to invest in the project
   C. Which turbine runner to repair
   D. The operating schedule
Answer: B. Feasibility completes design, cost, benefit and environment study to decide on investment. (Key point: Feasibility outcome)

3. In a storage reservoir, what is live storage?
   A. Volume below the minimum operating level
   B. Volume above the dam crest
   C. Volume between MOL and FSL
   D. Volume of the tailrace
Answer: C. Live storage lies between MOL and FSL; dead storage is below MOL. (Key point: Dead and live storage)

4. Where is the powerhouse placed in the storage hydel plant layout shown?
   A. Far downstream in another valley
   B. At the dam toe as a surface powerhouse
   C. On top of the reservoir
   D. Inside the intake tower
Answer: B. Water goes through a penstock to a surface powerhouse at the dam toe. (Key point: Storage layout)
