## Question

How is the dimensioning of a powerhouse performed in a hydropower project? What are the functional requirements to fix the approximate dimension of the power house?

## Short answer

Dimensioning starts from unit size, runner diameter, spiral casing and generator clearances; unit spacing is about 3 to 4 D, then add erection bay and clearances for length, breadth from generator/galleries, height from draft tube to crane rail. Functional requirements include hydraulic, generation, erection/maintenance, control, auxiliary, access, structural and future expansion needs.

## Answer

#### Dimensioning of a powerhouse
The size of the powerhouse is determined by the equipment, its erection, maintenance and operation needs. The process:

1. Fix the **number, type and rating of units** and their principal sizes (runner diameter $D$, spiral casing, generator and draft tube dimensions) from manufacturers' data or empirical relations.
2. Fix the **unit spacing** (bay width) from the spiral casing and generator clearances, usually about 3 to 4 $D$.
3. Add the **erection (service) bay** and **end clearances** to get the **length**.
4. Fix the **breadth** from the width of the generator/turbine section plus galleries and auxiliary side.
5. Fix the **height** from the draft tube floor up to the crane rail and roof.
6. Check the levels against **tailwater flood level** and the turbine setting.
7. Check the **layout** for access, safety and expansion, and balance cost and operation.

#### Functional requirements fixing the dimensions
- **Hydraulic and mechanical:** sizes of spiral casing, draft tube, valves and runner; the setting level of the turbine (cavitation); minimum water cover and tailwater level.
- **Generation:** generator floor space, clearance for rotor removal, bearings and exciters.
- **Erection and maintenance:** an erection bay large enough for the heaviest part (the rotor or runner) and space for dismantling a unit; crane capacity and hook height to lift the largest piece over equipment.
- **Control and switching:** control room, switchgear, batteries and cable galleries close to the machines.
- **Auxiliary services:** cooling water, drainage, dewatering, compressed air, oil handling, ventilation and fire protection.
- **Access and safety:** corridors, stairs, emergency exits, loading/unloading space for trucks, and workshops.
- **Structural:** loads from machines and crane, vibration, flood protection and foundation conditions.
- **Future expansion:** extra bay for additional units.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the first step in dimensioning a powerhouse?
   A. Fix the height from the draft tube floor to the roof
   B. Fix the number, type and rating of units and their principal sizes
   C. Check the layout for expansion
   D. Add the erection bay to get the length
Answer: B. Unit number, type, rating and principal sizes (runner diameter, spiral casing, generator, draft tube) come first because every other dimension follows from them. (Key point: Starting step of dimensioning)

2. The spacing (bay width) between units is usually about:
   A. 1 to 2 D
   B. 3 to 4 D
   C. 8 to 10 D
   D. Equal to the generator height
Answer: B. Unit spacing is fixed from spiral casing and generator clearances, usually about 3 to 4 times the runner diameter D. (Key point: Unit spacing)

3. What mainly governs the size of the erection bay and crane capacity?
   A. The size of the control room
   B. The heaviest part to be handled, such as the rotor or runner
   C. The number of staff
   D. The length of the tailrace
Answer: B. The erection bay and crane must accommodate and lift the heaviest piece (rotor or runner) over the equipment. (Key point: Erection bay sizing)

4. Why are levels checked against the tailwater flood level and turbine setting?
   A. To decide the colour of the building
   B. To keep the turbine setting safe against cavitation and the plant safe from flooding
   C. To size the transformer yard
   D. To fix the number of units
Answer: B. The setting level relates to cavitation and minimum water cover, and flood levels affect protection of the powerhouse. (Key point: Level checks)
