## Question

Sketch project management institute's (PMI) framework. Explain the relation between various components in it.

## Short answer

The PMI framework links stakeholders, knowledge areas, tools and techniques, and project success within a context of process groups and environment. Stakeholders set requirements; managers apply knowledge areas with tools to achieve success, satisfying stakeholders.

## Answer

The **PMI framework** (PMBOK framework) shows the components of project management and how they relate. It consists of the project management context, the knowledge areas, tools and techniques, and the key outcome of project success.

#### Sketch (Schwalbe's framework)

+----------------------------------+
KNOWLEDGE AREAS
Integration Scope Time Cost

TOOLS & TECHNIQUES

|             |                    |
    PROJECT SUCCESS
+----------------------------------+
PROJECT MANAGEMENT CONTEXT: process
groups, life cycle, environment
```
#### Components and relation
1. **Stakeholders**: people involved in or affected by the project (sponsor, customer, team, suppliers). Their needs and expectations drive the project.
2. **Project management knowledge areas**: scope, time, cost, quality, HR, communications, risk, procurement, integration (and stakeholder). They describe the competencies required.
3. **Project management tools and techniques**: practical methods that help to apply each knowledge area, e.g. WBS and scope statement for scope, Gantt chart/CPM/PERT for time, EVM for cost, Pareto/control charts for quality, risk register for risk.
4. **Project success**: the outcome, meaning meeting scope, time and cost goals, satisfying the customer and achieving the expected benefits.
5. **Context**: process groups, life cycle phases and the organisational environment in which the project occurs.
#### Relationship
- Stakeholders set requirements.
- Managers use the **knowledge areas** with suitable **tools and techniques**.
- Applied correctly in the context, these lead to **project success**, which in turn satisfies the stakeholders.
The framework helps students understand that project management is more than tools: it is a set of knowledge areas applied in an organisational context to meet stakeholder needs.
## Check yourself
The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.
1. The PMI (Schwalbe) framework consists of:
   A. Stakeholders, knowledge areas, tools and techniques, and project success within a context
   B. Only knowledge areas
   C. Only process groups
   D. Cost, time and scope
   Answer: A. Stakeholders, knowledge areas, tools and techniques lead to project success, within the project management context. (Key point: Components)
2. Which pairing of knowledge area and tool is correct?
   A. Cost with Gantt chart
   B. Time with risk register
   C. Scope with earned value
   D. Cost with earned value management
   Answer: D. EVM is used for cost; WBS for scope; Gantt/CPM/PERT for time; risk register for risk. (Key point: Tools and techniques)
3. How do the components relate?
   A. Success sets the stakeholders' requirements
   B. Stakeholders set requirements, managers apply knowledge areas with tools, leading to success that satisfies stakeholders
   C. Tools replace knowledge areas
   D. Context is unrelated
   Answer: B. Stakeholder needs drive the use of knowledge areas and tools, producing success that satisfies them. (Key point: Relationship)
4. Project success in the framework means:
   A. Only finishing on time
   B. Only staying under budget
   C. Using many tools
   D. Meeting scope, time and cost goals, satisfying the customer and achieving expected benefits
   Answer: D. Success is broader than the triple constraint, including customer satisfaction and benefits. (Key point: Meaning of success)
