## Question

What are project quality requirements?

## Short answer

Project quality requirements specify the conditions deliverables and processes must meet for acceptance. They include functional, performance, reliability, usability, security, maintainability, compliance, and acceptance criteria, and must be clear, measurable, testable, and traceable.

## Answer

Project quality requirements are the conditions or capabilities that the project's deliverables and processes must satisfy to be accepted by the customer and meet standards. They are identified during **Plan Quality Management** and recorded in the requirements documentation and the quality management plan.

#### Categories of quality requirements
1. **Functional requirements**: what the product must do (e.g. generate reports, process payments).
2. **Performance requirements**: speed, throughput, response time (page loads in under 3 seconds), capacity (10,000 concurrent users).
3. **Reliability and availability**: mean time between failures, 99.9% uptime.
4. **Usability**: ease of learning and use, accessibility, user interface standards.
5. **Security**: authentication, encryption, audit logs, data protection.
6. **Maintainability and portability**: ease of changes, support, compatibility on different platforms.
7. **Compliance requirements**: laws, regulation (e.g. Nepal Rastra Bank guidelines, Electronic Transactions Act), standards (ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 25010, IEEE).
8. **Process quality requirements**: coding standards, review procedures, documentation, testing coverage.
9. **Acceptance criteria**: conditions that must be met for the customer to accept.
10. **Environmental/operational**: hardware, network, installation conditions.

| Requirement | Metric example |
|---|---|
| Performance | Response time ≤ 2 s |
| Reliability | ≤ 1 failure/month |
| Quality of code | Defect density < 1/KLOC |
| Test coverage | ≥ 80% |

```
#### Characteristics of good requirements
Clear, measurable, testable, complete, consistent, traceable (via traceability matrix) and agreed with stakeholders.
**Example:** A mobile banking project requires two-factor authentication (security), transaction completion in under 5 seconds (performance), and compatibility with Android and iOS (portability).
## Check yourself
The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.
1. Where are quality requirements identified and recorded?
   A. During project closing
   B. Only in the test report
   C. During Plan Quality Management, in requirements documentation and quality management plan
   D. During quality audits
   Answer: C. They are identified in planning and recorded in the QM plan. (Key point: Where identified)
2. Which is a characteristic of a good quality requirement?
   A. Measurable and testable
   B. Vague and flexible
   C. Known only to developers
   D. Unmeasurable but ambitious
   Answer: A. Good requirements are clear, measurable, testable, complete, consistent and traceable. (Key point: Good requirement)
3. Which pair correctly matches a requirement with a metric?
   A. Reliability - page colour
   B. Performance - response time of 2 s or less
   C. Test coverage - response time
   D. Security - lines of code
   Answer: B. Performance is measured by response time; test coverage is a percentage like 80%. (Key point: Metric example)
