## Question

What do you mean by stakeholders analysis? Explain it in detail with their types.

## Short answer

Stakeholder analysis identifies all parties impacted by the project, assesses their interests and influence, and classifies them using a power/interest grid. Types include internal, external, primary, secondary, and key stakeholders, guiding communication and engagement strategies.

## Answer

**Stakeholders** are individuals, groups or organisations that are actively involved in the project or whose interests may be positively or negatively affected by the project. **Stakeholder analysis** is the process of identifying all stakeholders, then analysing their interests, expectations, influence and importance, to plan how to engage them and gain their support.

#### Steps in stakeholder analysis
1. **Identify stakeholders**: sponsor, customer, users, team, suppliers, government, public, competitors.
2. **Analyse** each one's role, interests, expectations, power, influence and attitude (supporter, neutral, resistant).
3. **Classify** using a grid.
4. **Plan engagement and communication** for each group.
5. **Review** regularly as the project changes.

#### Power/interest grid
```text
Power
High | Keep satisfied | Manage closely
Low  | Monitor        | Keep informed
     +----------------+---------------
        Low interest     High interest
```

#### Types of stakeholders
| Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Internal | Within the organisation | Sponsor, team, managers |
| External | Outside the organisation | Customers, suppliers, regulators, community |
| Primary | Directly affected | Users, team, sponsor |
| Secondary | Indirectly affected | Media, general public |
| Positive / supportive | Benefit from success | Customer |
| Negative / resistant | Lose from success | Competitor, staff fearing job loss |
| Key stakeholders | Can make or break the project | Sponsor, customer |

#### Stakeholder register
A document with name, role, contact, requirements, expectations, influence, and classification.

#### Importance
Reduces conflict, captures requirements, improves communication and avoids late surprises. Ignoring a stakeholder is a common reason for project failure.

**Example:** In a municipal e-tax system, stakeholders include the municipality (sponsor), tax officers (users), citizens, software vendor, Ministry of Federal Affairs and the bank partners; the Ministry has high power and is closely managed.
