## Question

Differentiate between a boss and a leader in terms of various leadership styles you have studied.

## Short answer

A boss relies on formal authority, uses an autocratic style, gives orders, controls through fear and takes credit. A leader uses personal influence, adopts democratic or transformational styles, involves the team, communicates openly, motivates by recognition and shares credit. Good leaders may use autocratic style in crisis but explain reasons.

## Answer

A boss uses position and authority to command; a leader uses influence to inspire. In terms of leadership styles, the boss is mostly **autocratic**, while a leader tends to be **democratic, transformational or participative**, adjusting style to the situation.

| Basis | Boss | Leader |
|---|---|---|
| Style | Autocratic, task-centred | Democratic/participative, people-and-task centred |
| Source of power | Formal position, rewards, punishment | Personal influence, trust, expertise |
| Approach | "Go and do it" | "Let's do it" |
| Decision making | Alone | With the team |
| Followers | Obey out of fear/compulsion | Follow willingly |
| Communication | One-way, downward | Two-way, open |
| Motivation | Fear, orders, money (Theory X) | Inspiration, recognition, growth (Theory Y) |
| Focus | Task and results | Vision, people and development |
| Credit and blame | Blames others, takes credit | Shares credit, takes responsibility |
| Delegation | Little | Empowers |
| Attitude to change | Resists | Encourages |
| Time view | Short-term | Long-term |
| Blake-Mouton grid | Authority-obedience (9,1) | Team management (9,9) |

#### Explanation with styles
- **Autocratic style (boss):** Quick, clear decisions and control, but low morale and creativity.
- **Democratic style (leader):** Slower but better decisions, high commitment.
- **Laissez-faire style:** Neither pure boss nor leader; freedom to experts.
- A good leader may use an autocratic style in a crisis, but explains reasons. A boss uses it all the time.

Example: A project manager at a Nepali construction firm who only gives orders and scolds is a boss; one who explains the goals, listens to engineers and develops juniors is a leader.
