## Question

What do you mean by organizational structure? How is it defined for a particular enterprise? Write advantages and disadvantages of line organization.

## Short answer

Organizational structure is the formal arrangement of jobs and authority lines. It is defined by identifying objectives, grouping activities into departments, assigning authority and span of control, and establishing relationships. Line organization has a simple vertical flow; its advantages are clear responsibility and quick decisions, while disadvantages include overloaded managers and rigidity.

## Answer

#### Organizational structure
Organizational structure is the formal arrangement of jobs, departments and authority relationships through which the work is divided, grouped and coordinated. It shows who does what, who reports to whom, and the flow of communication.

#### How it is defined for a particular enterprise
1. **Identify the objectives and activities** needed (production, sales, finance, HR).
2. **Group activities** into departments (by function, product, area or customer).
3. **Assign authority and responsibility** and decide the span of control and levels.
4. **Decide centralization or decentralization.**
5. **Establish relationships** (line, staff, functional) and communication channels.
6. **Prepare an organization chart and job descriptions.**

Factors influencing it: size, technology, environment, strategy, and the nature of the work. A bank defines it by function and region, while a manufacturing company may do so by product.

#### Line organization
The simplest structure where authority flows vertically from the top to bottom, and each person reports to only one superior.

```text
   [Director]
      |
  [Manager]
      |
 [Supervisor]
      |
  [Workers]
```

**Advantages:** simple, clear authority and responsibility, quick decisions, strong discipline, economical, unity of command.

**Disadvantages:** overload on top managers, lack of specialists, rigidity, delays in large units, poor coordination between departments, and dependence on a few people.
