## Question

With the help of suitable circuit diagram and waveform, explain the operation of single phase cycloconverter.

## Short answer

With a center-tapped transformer, for fo = fi/2 the positive group fires P1 and P2 alternately during two positive half cycles, then the negative group fires N2 and N1 for two negative half cycles, producing two positive then two negative humps. Line commutation naturally turns off thyristors at supply zeros.

## Answer

A single-phase cycloconverter converts single-phase AC at frequency $f_i$ directly to single-phase AC at a different frequency $f_o$ (usually $f_o = f_i/n$), with no DC link. It uses a positive group of thyristors for positive load current and a negative group for negative load current.

#### Circuit (centre-tapped transformer type)

```text
          a o----+---P1->|---+
            |    +---|<-N1---+
  ~ vs    Tr|                |
  (input) O o----[ Load ]----+  (common point K)
            |                |
          b o----+---P2->|---+
                 +---|<-N2---+
```

#### Operation ($f_o = f_i/2$, resistive load)

| Input half cycle | $v_{aO}$ | SCR fired | $v_o$ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | + | P1 | + |
| 2 | − | P2 | + |
| 3 | + | N2 | − |
| 4 | − | N1 | − |

- In halves 1 and 2 the positive group works as a full-wave rectifier, producing two positive humps (positive output half cycle).
- In halves 3 and 4 the negative group gives two negative humps.
- Each thyristor turns off naturally when the supply (and R-load current) reaches zero.

       (alternate humps -ve)
 vo  /\  /\

 --/--------\--------/---
             \  /\  /
              \/  \/
    | P1 | P2 | N2 | N1 |
    |<--- To = 2 Ti --->|
```
Output period = 2 × input period, so 50 Hz gives 25 Hz. For $f_i/3$ or $f_i/4$, each group is kept on for 3 or 4 input half cycles.
#### Output voltage control
With firing delay $\alpha$ for every SCR (R load):
$$
V_o = V_s\sqrt{\frac{1}{\pi}\left(\pi - \alpha + \frac{\sin 2\alpha}{2}\right)}
$$
Varying $\alpha$ through each output half cycle (larger at the ends, smaller in the middle) makes the output closer to a sine wave.
## Check yourself
The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.
1. What does a single-phase cycloconverter use to produce AC at a different frequency?
   A. A positive group for positive load current and a negative group for negative load current, with no DC link
   B. A rectifier and a battery
   C. A single thyristor
   D. A DC link and an inverter
   Answer: A. The two groups are switched alternately to build the output wave directly from the input. (Key point: Principle)
2. In the fo = fi/2 table, which SCR is fired in input half cycle 3?
   A. P1
   B. N2
   C. P2
   D. N1
   Answer: B. Halves 1 and 2 use P1 and P2 (positive), and halves 3 and 4 use N2 and N1 (negative). (Key point: Operation for fo = fi/2)
3. How is output voltage controlled and the waveform improved?
   A. By changing the supply frequency
   B. By delaying the firing by alpha, larger at the ends and smaller in the middle of each output half cycle
   C. By changing the load resistance
   D. By adding a DC link
   Answer: B. Vo = Vs sqrt((1/pi)(pi - alpha + sin(2 alpha)/2)), and varying alpha through the half cycle makes the output closer to a sine. (Key point: Voltage control)
