## Question

List out the different phases of the project life cycle. Explain in detail the activities to be done in the implementation phase of the project life cycle.

## Short answer

The project life cycle phases are initiation, planning, implementation and termination. Implementation turns the plan into the product and includes mobilisation, procurement, construction, resource management, monitoring and control, quality testing, variation and claims management, safety, environmental and community relations, reporting and stakeholder coordination.

## Answer

#### Phases of the project life cycle
1. Initiation (concept)
2. Planning (definition)
3. Implementation (execution)
4. Termination (closure)

#### Activities in the implementation phase
The implementation (execution) phase is where the plan is turned into the actual product and usually takes the largest share of cost and effort.

1. Mobilisation: site office, camps, machinery, manpower, materials.
2. Procurement of materials, equipment and subcontractors.
3. Construction or production work as per drawings and specifications.
4. Resource management: allocation of labour, equipment and materials, and cash flow.
5. Monitoring and control of progress, cost and quality; comparing actual with planned and taking corrective action.
6. Quality assurance, testing and inspection.
7. Change and variation management, claims and payments to contractors.
8. Safety, environmental management and community relations.
9. Regular reporting and coordination meetings with the client and stakeholders.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the implementation phase?
   A. The phase where the plan is turned into the actual product, usually taking the largest share of cost and effort
   B. The final review only
   C. The phase of idea generation
   D. The feasibility phase
Answer: A. It is the execution phase and is the most costly and effort-intensive. (Key point: Implementation purpose)

2. What does mobilisation include?
   A. Go/no-go decision
   B. Site office, camps, machinery, manpower and materials
   C. Final bill and handover
   D. Feasibility studies
Answer: B. Mobilisation is setting up the site resources. (Key point: Mobilisation)

3. What is done in monitoring and control?
   A. Release retention
   B. Select project idea
   C. Prepare the proposal
   D. Compare actual with planned progress, cost and quality and take corrective action
Answer: D. Actual is compared with plan and corrective action taken. (Key point: Monitoring and control)

4. Which activity deals with variations and payments to contractors?
   A. Mobilisation
   B. Change and variation management, claims and payments
   C. Procurement only
   D. Initiation
Answer: B. Item 7 covers variation management, claims and payments. (Key point: Change management)

5. Which phase comes immediately after implementation?
   A. Feasibility
   B. Initiation
