## Question

Explain conservation and protection of environment.

## Short answer

Conservation is the wise, planned and sustainable use of natural resources so present needs are met without harming future generations. Protection prevents damage to the environment through laws, EIA, pollution control, monitoring and public awareness. Key measures include forest, soil, water, energy and biodiversity conservation, plus the 3R principle.

## Answer

**Conservation of environment** is the wise, planned and sustainable use of natural resources (forest, water, soil, wildlife, minerals) so that present needs are met without reducing the ability of future generations to meet theirs. **Protection of environment** means preventing damage to the environment from pollution, over-exploitation and harmful activities through laws, institutions and public action.

#### Conservation measures
- **Forest conservation** – community forestry, leasehold forestry, afforestation and controlled harvesting.
- **Soil conservation** – terracing, contour farming, check dams, watershed management.
- **Water conservation** – rainwater harvesting, recharge ponds, efficient irrigation (drip/sprinkler), protecting springs.
- **Energy conservation** – efficient appliances, LED lights, public transport, renewable energy.
- **Biodiversity conservation** – national parks, conservation areas, buffer zones, wildlife corridors.
- **3R principle** – reduce, reuse and recycle materials and waste.

#### Protection measures
- **Laws and policies** – in Nepal the Environment Protection Act 2076 (2019), Forest Act 2076, National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2029, and pollution standards.
- **EIA and IEE** before development projects to predict and reduce impacts.
- **Pollution control** – vehicle emission tests, ban on old vehicles, effluent treatment plants, sanitary landfills.
- **Monitoring and enforcement** by government bodies (Ministry of Forests and Environment, Department of Environment).
- **Public awareness and participation** – schools, media, local groups, and campaigns such as clean-up drives.
- **International cooperation** – Ramsar Convention, CBD, Paris Agreement.

**Why it matters:** clean air and water, food security, protection from floods and landslides, tourism income and long-term sustainable development all depend on a healthy environment.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What does protection of environment mean?
   A. Leaving nature untouched
   B. Increasing resource extraction
   C. Preventing damage from pollution and over-exploitation through laws, institutions and public action
   D. Planned sustainable use of resources
Answer: C. Protection focuses on preventing damage; conservation on sustainable use. (Key point: Protection meaning)

2. Which is a soil conservation measure?
   A. Vehicle emission tests
   B. Sanitary landfill
   C. EIA
   D. Terracing, contour farming and check dams
Answer: D. These reduce erosion and runoff. (Key point: Soil conservation measure)

3. Which is a protection measure?
   A. Vehicle emission tests and effluent treatment plants
   B. Rainwater harvesting
   C. 3R
   D. Rotational grazing
Answer: A. Pollution control through emission tests and treatment is protection. (Key point: Protection measure)
