## Question

Discuss all the major environmental issues of Nepal. Also write down probable strategies to mitigate those issues.

## Short answer

Major environmental issues include deforestation, soil erosion and landslides, air pollution from vehicles and brick kilns, water pollution in rivers, solid waste mismanagement, climate change impacts, biodiversity loss, unplanned urbanization, and riverbed mining. Mitigation strategies: community forestry, watershed conservation, clean energy, electric transport, sewage treatment, 3R waste management, enforcement of Environment Protection Act 2076, EIA, and climate adaptation plans.

## Answer

Nepal's environment is fragile due to young mountains, monsoon rain, rapid urbanisation and poverty. The major environmental issues are:

1. **Deforestation and forest degradation** – illegal logging, fuelwood use, encroachment and road building.
2. **Soil erosion and landslides** – fragile young mountains, steep slopes, haphazard rural roads cut by bulldozers.
3. **Air pollution** – Kathmandu Valley often has PM2.5 far above WHO limits; sources: vehicles, brick kilns, dust, waste burning, forest fires.
4. **Water pollution** – untreated sewage and industrial waste in rivers (Bagmati, Bishnumati); contaminated drinking water; arsenic in Terai groundwater.
5. **Solid waste management** – open dumping; the Sisdol/Bancharedanda landfill problem in Kathmandu.
6. **Unplanned urbanisation** – loss of open space and farmland, traffic, noise.
7. **Climate change impacts** – glacier melt, GLOF risk, erratic rainfall, floods and droughts, drying springs.
8. **Loss of biodiversity** – poaching, habitat loss, invasive species.
9. **Riverbed mining** – excessive sand and gravel extraction (e.g. Chure region).
10. **Floods and disasters** – Terai floods, landslides, earthquakes.
11. **Noise pollution** in cities and **haphazard industrial location**.
12. **Encroachment of wetlands and public land.**

#### Probable strategies to mitigate the issues

| Issue | Strategies |
|---|---|
| Deforestation | Community and leasehold forestry, afforestation, alternative energy (biogas, LPG, electric cooking), strict anti-encroachment |
| Landslides, erosion | Watershed and Chure conservation (President Chure-Terai Madhesh Programme), bio-engineering, EIA for roads |
| Air pollution | Electric public transport, phase-out of old vehicles, cleaner brick kiln technology, dust control, ban on waste burning, air-quality monitoring |
| Water pollution | Sewage treatment plants, separate drains, industrial effluent standards, Bagmati clean-up, safe drinking water and arsenic filters |
| Solid waste | Segregation at source, 3R, composting, recycling, sanitary landfill, ban on thin plastic bags |
| Climate change | National Adaptation Plan (2021), LAPA, renewable energy, net-zero target by 2045 |
| GLOF and floods | Glacier lake monitoring, lake lowering, early warning, river training |
| Biodiversity | Protected areas (about 23–24% of land), anti-poaching, buffer-zone benefit sharing |
| Urbanisation | Land-use plans, building codes, open spaces, green belts |
| Riverbed mining | Regulated extraction with IEE/EIA, monitoring |

**General strategies:** strict implementation of the **Environment Protection Act, 2076** and Regulations 2077, environmental education and awareness, people's participation, use of appropriate and clean technology, coordination among federal, provincial and local governments, and seeking international climate finance.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What makes soil erosion and landslides severe in Nepal?
   A. Fragile young mountains, steep slopes and haphazard bulldozer-cut rural roads
   B. Flat Terai terrain
   C. Industrial effluent
   D. Use of LPG
Answer: A. Geology, slope and poorly designed roads cause slope failures. (Key point: Causes of landslides)

2. Which set is a strategy for deforestation?
   A. Thin-plastic ban
   B. Community and leasehold forestry, afforestation, biogas and electric cooking
   C. Sewage plants and arsenic filters
   D. Lake lowering
Answer: B. Reducing fuelwood use and managing forests locally addresses deforestation. (Key point: Strategy for deforestation)

3. Which strategy matches air pollution in Kathmandu?
   A. Segregation at source
   B. Wildlife buffer zones
   C. Glacier lake monitoring
   D. Electric public transport, phase-out of old vehicles, cleaner brick kilns and ban on waste burning
Answer: D. These target vehicles, kilns and burning, the main sources. (Key point: Strategy for air pollution)

4. Which legal instrument is named for strict implementation as a general strategy?
   A. Forest Act 1993
   B. Kyoto Protocol
   C. Nepal Constitution 1990
   D. Environment Protection Act, 2076
Answer: D. The answer cites the Environment Protection Act, 2076 and Regulations 2077. (Key point: General strategies)
