## Question

Define technology and its impact on societies. Define appropriate technology and its relevancy to LDC.

## Short answer

Technology is applying knowledge and tools to solve problems; it boosts productivity, health, and connectivity but may cause unemployment and environmental harm. Appropriate technology suits local conditions—low-cost, labour-intensive, using local resources. For LDCs like Nepal, it is relevant due to capital scarcity, labour abundance, reducing imports, promoting rural development, and being eco-friendly.

## Answer

#### Technology and its impact on societies
**Technology** is the application of scientific knowledge, tools, skills and organisation to produce goods and services and solve human problems.

**Positive impacts:**
- Higher productivity, economic growth and new jobs
- Better health care and longer life
- Fast transport and communication; global connection
- Access to education and information; empowerment of women and marginalised groups

**Negative impacts:**
- Unemployment of unskilled workers due to automation
- Income inequality and digital divide
- Erosion of culture and traditional values; breakdown of joint families
- Pollution, deforestation and climate change
- Misuse: weapons, cyber crime, privacy loss

#### Appropriate technology
**Appropriate technology** is technology suited to the local economic, social, cultural and environmental conditions: low-cost, small-scale, labour-intensive, simple to operate and repair, based on local materials and skills, and environmentally friendly (E. F. Schumacher, *Small Is Beautiful*, 1973).

Examples: micro-hydro, biogas, improved cooking stoves, improved water mills, solar home systems, rainwater harvesting.

#### Relevancy to LDCs (like Nepal)
1. **Low capital requirement:** LDCs lack capital; AT is cheap to install.
2. **Employment:** it is labour-intensive and uses the large unemployed labour force.
3. **Local resources and skills:** uses local materials and can be repaired by local technicians, reducing import dependence.
4. **Rural development:** decentralised technologies (micro-hydro, solar) reach remote villages where the national grid or heavy machines cannot.
5. **Environment friendly:** renewable energy reduces deforestation and pollution.
6. **Self-reliance and ownership:** communities can build, own and maintain it.
7. **Poverty reduction:** saves time and fuel (e.g. biogas saves women's time collecting firewood), raising income.

Thus appropriate technology helps LDCs develop in a sustainable and equitable way.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which is a negative impact of technology on society?
   A. Better health care
   B. Access to education
   C. Unemployment of unskilled workers due to automation
   D. Global connection
Answer: C. Automation causes unemployment of unskilled workers; the others are positive impacts. (Key point: Negative impacts)

2. Which describes appropriate technology?
   A. Large-scale, imported and capital-heavy
   B. Low-cost, small-scale, labour-intensive, simple to repair, using local materials and skills
   C. Fully automated high technology
   D. Technology that needs foreign experts
Answer: B. Appropriate technology is suited to local economic, social, cultural and environmental conditions. (Key point: Appropriate technology)

3. Why is AT relevant to LDCs with respect to capital and employment?
   A. LDCs have excess capital
   B. LDCs have no unemployed people
   C. It requires imported machines
   D. LDCs lack capital and have a large unemployed labour force, and AT is cheap and labour-intensive
Answer: D. AT's low capital need and labour intensity match LDC resources. (Key point: Relevance to LDCs: capital)

4. Why are decentralised technologies like micro-hydro and solar useful for rural development?
   A. They reach remote villages where the national grid or heavy machines cannot
   B. They need the national grid
   C. They are only for cities
   D. They need large dams
Answer: A. Decentralised technologies serve remote villages, and e.g. biogas saves women's time collecting firewood. (Key point: Rural development)
