## Question

What do you mean by technology? Discuss about its benefits in education sector.

## Short answer

Technology is the application of scientific knowledge, tools and methods to solve practical problems. In education it gives access to online classes, vast resources, interactive learning, personalised pace, distance learning, efficient administration and inclusive tools. The main limitation is the digital divide affecting poor and rural students.

## Answer

#### Technology
**Technology** is the application of scientific knowledge, tools, skills and organised methods to produce goods and services and solve practical problems. Educational technology is its use for teaching and learning.

#### Benefits of technology in the education sector
1. **Access to education anywhere:** online classes, MOOCs (Coursera, edX, Khan Academy) and video lectures reach students in remote villages and abroad. During COVID-19 lockdowns, schools and universities in Nepal continued through Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom.
2. **Vast learning resources:** e-libraries, e-journals, Wikipedia and open textbooks give free and up-to-date material.
3. **Interactive and visual learning:** animations, simulations, virtual labs and multimedia make difficult concepts (e.g. circuits, anatomy) easy to understand.
4. **Personalised learning:** students learn at their own pace; adaptive software and AI tutors adjust to each learner.
5. **Distance and lifelong learning:** working people can upgrade skills through online courses and open universities.
6. **Better teaching:** teachers use projectors, smart boards, presentation software and learning management systems (Moodle) to plan and deliver lessons.
7. **Efficient administration:** online admission, fee payment, result publication and attendance systems save time (e.g. results published online by universities).
8. **Assessment and feedback:** online quizzes, plagiarism checkers and automatic grading give quick feedback.
9. **Collaboration:** students and researchers communicate and work together through email, forums and cloud tools across countries.
10. **Skill development:** students learn ICT, coding and digital literacy needed for jobs in the information age.
11. **Inclusive education:** screen readers, audio books and Braille devices help students with disabilities.
12. **Research:** computers and software enable data analysis, simulation and fast publication.

#### Limitations
- Digital divide: poor and rural students lack devices, internet and electricity.
- Distraction, screen addiction and less face-to-face interaction.
- Risk of plagiarism and over-dependence on AI.

Overall, technology has made education more accessible, interactive and efficient; the challenge for Nepal is to provide equal access through school ICT labs, internet in rural areas and teacher training.
