## Question

Write a short note on technology and water air pollution.

## Short answer

Technology causes pollution through industries, vehicles, agriculture, and waste but also offers solutions. Clean energy, electric vehicles, scrubbers, and monitoring reduce air pollution; sewage treatment, household filters, and chlorination address water pollution. Proper choice and management of technology is key.

## Answer

Technology is both a **cause of** and a **solution to** water and air pollution.

#### Technology as a cause
- **Industrial technology** – factories, thermal power plants and brick kilns release smoke, SO₂, NOₓ and particulates; tanneries, dyeing and chemical plants discharge toxic effluents and heavy metals into rivers.
- **Transport technology** – petrol and diesel vehicles are a major source of urban air pollution (CO, NOₓ, PM2.5) and of oil-polluted runoff.
- **Agricultural technology** – chemical fertilisers and pesticides pollute rivers and groundwater (nitrate, eutrophication).
- **Consumer technology** – plastics and e-waste, which are often burnt or dumped.
- **Mining and construction** – dust in air and sediment in water.

#### Technology as a solution
**For air pollution**
- Clean energy: hydropower, solar, wind, biogas.
- Electric vehicles, catalytic converters, cleaner fuels (Euro standards).
- Filters, electrostatic precipitators and scrubbers in industries; zig-zag brick kilns.
- Improved cook stoves and induction cooking.
- Real-time air quality monitoring sensors and satellite data.

**For water pollution**
- Sewage treatment (activated sludge, oxidation ponds, constructed wetlands).
- Effluent treatment plants in industries.
- Drinking water treatment: filtration, chlorination, UV, arsenic and iron removal filters.
- Low-cost household technologies: SODIS, biosand filters.
- Sensors and GIS for water quality monitoring.

**Conclusion:** the problem is not technology itself but the choice and management of it. Appropriate, cleaner technology with proper regulation can reduce pollution while supporting development.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. The note concludes that technology is:
   A. Only a cause of pollution
   B. Only a solution to pollution
   C. Both a cause of and a solution to pollution
   D. Unrelated to pollution
Answer: C. Technology pollutes when poorly chosen or managed and also provides solutions. (Key point: Dual role)

2. Which pollution is caused by chemical fertilisers and pesticides?
   A. Nitrate pollution and eutrophication of rivers and groundwater
   B. Noise pollution
   C. SO2 from power plants
   D. Radioactive pollution
Answer: A. Fertiliser runoff gives nitrate and nutrient pollution. (Key point: Agricultural technology)

3. Which technologies reduce industrial air pollution?
   A. Electrostatic precipitators, scrubbers and filters
   B. Open burning of waste
   C. Use of more diesel
   D. Taller roads
Answer: A. Precipitators, scrubbers and filters remove particulates and gases from industrial emissions. (Key point: Industrial air control)

4. According to the conclusion, what matters most in controlling pollution?
   A. Banning all technology
   B. The choice and management of technology, with regulation
   C. Ignoring development
   D. Using more plastics
Answer: B. The problem is not technology itself but how it is chosen and managed. (Key point: Key conclusion)
