## Question

Summarize the impacts of World War I and II. Also describe population explosion.

## Short answer

WWI caused 15–20 million deaths, empire falls and the Versailles Treaty; WWII caused 70–85 million deaths, Holocaust, UN, Cold War, decolonisation and the nuclear age. Population explosion is rapid growth from falling death rates and high birth rates, driven by medical advances, Green Revolution and sanitation, causing resource pressure and environmental harm.

## Answer

#### Impacts of World War I (1914–1918)

- **Human loss:** about 15–20 million deaths and millions injured.
- **Political:** fall of the German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman and Russian empires; new nations (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia); Russian Revolution (1917); League of Nations (1920).
- **Economic:** Europe's economy weakened, heavy war debts; USA became a creditor nation.
- **Social:** women entered factories and later got voting rights in many countries.
- **Technology:** tanks, aircraft, submarines, chemical weapons, radio.
- The harsh **Treaty of Versailles** sowed the seeds of WWII.

#### Impacts of World War II (1939–1945)

- **Human loss:** about 70–85 million deaths, Holocaust, millions of refugees.
- **Political:** United Nations (1945); USA and USSR as superpowers; **Cold War**; division of Germany and Korea; **decolonisation** of Asia and Africa.
- **Economic:** destruction of Europe and Japan; IMF, World Bank, GATT; Marshall Plan; US dollar as world currency.
- **Social:** human rights (UDHR 1948), women's employment, baby boom, welfare states.
- **Technology:** radar, jet engines, rockets, nuclear energy, computers, antibiotics.

#### Population explosion

**Population explosion** is a sudden, very rapid rise in population when death rates fall but birth rates remain high. World population rose from about 2.5 billion in 1950 to over **8 billion in 2022**.

**Causes:**
- Medical progress (vaccines, antibiotics — partly from wartime research), control of epidemics.
- Green Revolution: more food, less famine.
- Better sanitation and safe water; lower infant mortality; longer life.
- High birth rates due to early marriage, illiteracy, poverty, desire for sons, low contraceptive use.
- Post-war **baby boom** in many countries.

**Effects:**
- Pressure on food, water, energy, housing and jobs.
- Deforestation, pollution, loss of biodiversity and climate change.
- Unemployment, poverty, slums and migration.
- Strain on health and education services.

**Control measures:** education (especially of girls), family planning, women's empowerment, poverty reduction, and better health services so families need fewer children.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How did WWI's Treaty of Versailles relate to WWII?
   A. It prevented WWII
   B. It sowed the seeds of WWII
   C. It created the UN
   D. It ended colonialism
Answer: B. The harsh treaty caused resentment in Germany that helped lead to WWII. (Key point: Treaty of Versailles)

2. Which is a political impact of WWII?
   A. Collapse of the League of Nations leading to empires rising
   B. USA and USSR as superpowers, Cold War and decolonisation
   C. Return of the Ottoman Empire
   D. End of the United Nations
Answer: B. WWII produced two superpowers, the Cold War and decolonisation of Asia and Africa. (Key point: WWII impacts)

3. What defines a population explosion?
   A. Birth rates falling faster than death rates
   B. Death rates fall while birth rates remain high, causing rapid growth
   C. Both birth and death rates rise equally
   D. Population decreasing quickly
Answer: B. Falling death rates with high birth rates produce very rapid growth (2.5 billion in 1950 to over 8 billion in 2022). (Key point: Population explosion)

4. Which is a control measure for population explosion?
   A. Early marriage
   B. Education of girls, family planning and women's empowerment
   C. Reducing health services
   D. Preferring sons
Answer: B. Education (especially of girls), family planning and empowerment reduce birth rates. (Key point: Control measures)
