## Question

What was the role of the two world wars in advancing technology? How did they shape the new cultural values?

## Short answer

The wars accelerated technology: WWI brought aircraft, tanks and radio; WWII advanced radar, computers, nuclear energy, jet engines and penicillin. Culturally they empowered women, spurred human rights and peace movements (UN, UDHR), declined colonialism, fostered mass consumer culture and faith in science, and established welfare states.

## Answer

The two world wars (1914–1918 and 1939–1945) were "total wars" in which governments put science and industry fully behind the war effort. This greatly speeded up technology and also changed social and cultural values.

#### Role in advancing technology

| Field | WW I | WW II |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | Aircraft, tanks, trucks | Jet engines, better aircraft |
| Communication | Wireless radio | Radar, encryption, early computers (Colossus, ENIAC 1945) |
| Energy | – | Nuclear fission, atomic bomb (1945) |
| Medicine | Blood transfusion, X-ray use | Mass-produced penicillin, DDT |
| Materials | Steel, chemicals | Synthetic rubber, nylon, plastics |
| Rockets | – | V-2 rocket, base for space age |

After the wars these became civilian technologies: commercial flights, nuclear power, computers, radio and TV, antibiotics, and space exploration.

#### Shaping of new cultural values

- **Women's empowerment** – women worked in factories and offices; they gained voting rights and more freedom.
- **Human rights and peace** – UN (1945) and Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948); anti-war and anti-nuclear movements.
- **Decline of colonial and racial ideas** – independence movements and later civil rights movements.
- **Consumer and mass culture** – growth of middle class, cinema, radio, TV, American popular culture.
- **Faith in science** – governments funded research (R&D culture).
- **Welfare state** – governments took responsibility for health, education and social security.
