## Question

Write down the major economic, social and political impacts of the World War II.

## Short answer

World War II caused massive destruction and loss of life (70-85 million deaths), made the USA the dominant economic power, and created the IMF, World Bank and Marshall Plan. Socially it brought women into work, human rights declarations and a baby boom. Politically it formed the UN, began the Cold War and triggered decolonisation.

## Answer

**World War II (1939–1945)** was fought between the Allies (Britain, France, USSR, USA, China) and the Axis powers (Germany, Italy, Japan). It was the deadliest and most destructive war in history and reshaped the world.

#### Economic impacts

- **Huge destruction** – cities, factories, railways and farms in Europe, USSR, Japan and China were destroyed; large debts and inflation followed.
- **USA as economic superpower** – US industry was untouched and grew; the US dollar became the world's main currency (Bretton Woods system, 1944).
- **New economic institutions** – International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank (1944); GATT (1947), later WTO.
- **Marshall Plan (1948)** – US aid rebuilt Western Europe; rapid recovery of Germany and Japan later followed.
- **Technology spin-offs** – radar, jet engine, computers, nuclear energy, antibiotics (penicillin mass production) and synthetic materials moved into civilian industry.
- **Welfare state and planned economies** – Britain and others started social security; Eastern Europe adopted Soviet-style planning.

#### Social impacts

- **Massive loss of life** – about 70–85 million deaths, including about 6 million Jews in the Holocaust.
- **Refugees and migration** – millions displaced; partition and population transfers.
- **Women in the workforce** – women took factory jobs during the war, which advanced women's rights.
- **Human rights** – Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948); Geneva Conventions (1949).
- **Baby boom** after the war and growth of the middle class, mass education and consumer culture.

#### Political impacts

- **United Nations (1945)** formed to keep peace.
- **Cold War** – the world split into two blocs: USA-led (NATO, 1949) and USSR-led (Warsaw Pact, 1955); arms race and nuclear threat.
- **Decolonisation** – weakened European powers lost colonies: India and Pakistan (1947), Indonesia, and most of Africa by the 1960s.
- **Division of Germany and Korea**; Israel created (1948); Communist victory in China (1949).
- **Decline of Britain and France** as great powers; rise of USA and USSR as superpowers.
