## Question

On the basis of utilization of electrical energy, describe the role of electrical energy in sustainable development of the country.

## Short answer

Electrical energy, generated largely from indigenous renewable sources like hydropower, replaces imported fossil fuels in all sectors—domestic, industry, transport, agriculture—reducing pollution, deforestation, and trade deficit while raising living standards. This promotes economic growth, social well-being, and environmental sustainability, the pillars of sustainable development.

## Answer

Sustainable development means meeting present needs without harming the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Electrical energy supports it because it can be produced from **renewable sources** (in Nepal mainly hydropower, also solar and wind), is clean at the point of use, and can replace imported fossil fuels in almost every end use.

#### Role through the main areas of utilization

**1. Domestic sector**
- Electric cooking (induction stoves, rice cookers) replaces LPG, kerosene and firewood, reducing indoor air pollution, deforestation and LPG imports.
- Lighting, refrigeration, water heating and communication raise living standards, health and education (students can study at night, digital learning).

**2. Industrial sector**
- Electric drives (motors), electric furnaces, arc welding and electrolysis give efficient, controllable, pollution-free production.
- Cement, steel, food processing and textile industries can run on domestic hydropower instead of diesel or coal, creating jobs and adding value locally.

**3. Commercial and service sector**
- Hotels, hospitals, offices, banks and IT services depend on electricity; tourism (Nepal's key sector) needs reliable supply.

**4. Transport (electric traction and e-mobility)**
- Electric vehicles, trolley buses, electric railways and cable cars use hydropower instead of imported petroleum, cutting the trade deficit and urban air pollution. Nepal's large EV import growth is an example.

**5. Agriculture**
- Electric pumps for irrigation, cold storage, agro-processing raise productivity and rural income.

**6. Social services**
- Water supply pumping, street lighting, health posts, schools and telecommunication need electricity.

#### Dimensions of sustainability

| Dimension | Role of electrical energy |
|---|---|
| Economic | Industrialisation, jobs, export of surplus power to India/Bangladesh, lower fuel import bill |
| Social | Better health, education, gender equity (less drudgery collecting firewood) |
| Environmental | Low carbon, less deforestation and air pollution, climate change mitigation |
| Energy security | Uses indigenous renewable resource instead of imported fuel |

```text
 Hydro/solar/wind (renewable)
          |
     Electricity
          +--> Domestic    --> living standard
          +--> Industry    --> GDP, jobs
          +--> Transport   --> less oil import
          +--> Agriculture --> food security
          +--> Export      --> revenue
```

#### What is needed

- Increase per-capita consumption (still low in Nepal) by promoting electric cooking, EVs and electricity-intensive industry.
- Reliable, quality supply: strong transmission and distribution, reduced losses.
- Efficient utilization: energy-efficient motors, LED lighting, demand side management and suitable time-of-day tariffs.
- Rural electrification through grid extension and micro/mini hydro.

Thus wider and more efficient utilization of clean electrical energy drives economic growth while protecting the environment, which is the core of sustainable development.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why can electrical energy support sustainable development in Nepal?
   A. It is produced only from imported fuels
   B. It can come from renewable sources like hydropower and replace imported fossil fuels in most end uses
   C. It can be stored cheaply in bulk
   D. It produces smoke only at the point of use
   Answer: B. Electricity can be generated from renewables (mainly hydro in Nepal), is clean at the point of use, and can replace imported fossil fuels. (Key point: Why electricity supports sustainability)

2. Which is a benefit of replacing LPG, kerosene and firewood with electric cooking?
   A. Higher indoor air pollution
   B. More deforestation
   C. Reduced indoor air pollution, deforestation and LPG imports
   D. Higher petroleum imports
   Answer: C. Induction cooking uses local hydropower, so it cuts indoor smoke, forest loss and LPG imports. (Key point: Electric cooking benefits)

3. How does electric transport (EVs, trolley buses, railways) help sustainability?
   A. It runs on hydropower instead of imported petroleum, cutting the trade deficit and urban air pollution
   B. It increases petroleum imports
   C. It removes the need for transmission lines
   D. It only benefits industry
   Answer: A. Electric traction uses indigenous hydropower in place of imported petroleum. (Key point: Transport and trade deficit)

4. In the dimensions of sustainability, what does 'energy security' mean for electricity?
   A. Using imported fuel reliably
   B. Storing coal in bulk
   C. Using an indigenous renewable resource instead of imported fuel
   D. Protecting lines from lightning
   Answer: C. Energy security comes from relying on a local renewable resource rather than imported fuel. (Key point: Energy security dimension)
