## Question

Write a brief account on the history of the Web.

## Short answer

The Web was proposed by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989, creating HTML, HTTP, and URL, with the first site in 1991. Mosaic (1993) popularized it; W3C formed in 1994. Later, Web 2.0 (AJAX, social media) and HTML5 emerged.

## Answer

The **World Wide Web (WWW)** is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed through the Internet.

#### Brief history
- **1945 – Memex idea:** Vannevar Bush imagined a device for linking documents. Ted Nelson later coined the words *hypertext* and *hypermedia* (1960s).
- **1989 – Proposal:** Tim Berners-Lee, working at CERN (Switzerland), proposed an information system to share research documents using hypertext.
- **1990-91 – First web:** He wrote the first web browser/editor (*WorldWideWeb*, later Nexus), the first web server (httpd) and defined **HTML, HTTP and URL**. The first website went live in 1991 at CERN.
- **1993 – Mosaic:** Marc Andreessen and NCSA released Mosaic, the first popular graphical browser. CERN made the Web technology royalty-free.
- **1994 – W3C:** Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium at MIT to develop open standards. Netscape Navigator was released; Yahoo and early search engines appeared.
- **1995-1999:** Internet Explorer, JavaScript (1995), CSS (1996), HTML 4 (1997), XML (1998); Google (1998), Amazon and eBay grew; the dot-com boom.
- **2000s – Web 2.0:** Blogs, wikis, social networking (Facebook 2004, YouTube 2005), AJAX and user-generated content.
- **2010s-present:** HTML5, mobile web, cloud apps, web services/APIs, and efforts towards the Semantic Web (Web 3.0).
