## Question

How internet evolved? Explain the importance of web technology.

## Short answer

The Internet evolved from ARPANET through TCP/IP and NSFNET to commercial ISPs and the WWW. Web technology (HTML, CSS, HTTP, etc.) enables global information access, communication, e-commerce, education, platform independence, and job creation.

## Answer

#### Evolution of the Internet
The **Internet** is a worldwide collection of networks that communicate using TCP/IP. It evolved in these steps:
1. **1969 – ARPANET:** A packet-switched network funded by the US Department of Defense, connecting four sites at first (UCLA, SRI, UC Santa Barbara and the University of Utah).
2. **1970s:** Email (1971) and the idea of internetworking. Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn developed TCP/IP.
3. **1983:** ARPANET adopted TCP/IP; DNS was introduced in 1984.
4. **Mid 1980s:** NSFNET provided a high-speed academic backbone.
5. **1989-1995:** Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web at CERN; graphical browsers (Mosaic, Netscape) popularised the Internet; commercial ISPs began.
6. **2000s onward:** Broadband, Wi-Fi, mobile Internet, social networks, cloud computing and IoT.

#### Importance of web technology
Web technology means the standards and tools (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, HTTP, server-side languages, databases) used to build and deliver content and applications over the Web.
- **Information access:** Anyone can publish and find information instantly (search engines, e-libraries, news).
- **Communication:** Email, chat, video calls, social networks and forums connect people across the world cheaply.
- **E-commerce:** Online shopping, e-banking and digital payments (eSewa, Khalti) reduce cost and time.
- **Education:** Online classes, learning management systems and open courses reach remote students.
- **Platform independence:** A web application runs in any browser on any operating system; no installation is needed and updates are central.
- **Business and government:** E-governance, online tax filing, ticketing and customer services improve transparency and efficiency.
- **Entertainment and collaboration:** Streaming, online games, shared documents and cloud storage.
- **Job creation:** Web development, hosting, digital marketing and freelancing create employment.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. When did ARPANET adopt TCP/IP and when was DNS introduced?
   A. TCP/IP in 1983, DNS in 1984
   B. TCP/IP in 1969, DNS in 1971
   C. TCP/IP in 1984, DNS in 1983
   D. TCP/IP in 1995, DNS in 1989
Answer: A. ARPANET adopted TCP/IP in 1983 and DNS followed in 1984. (Key point: TCP/IP adoption and DNS)

2. Who invented the World Wide Web and where?
   A. Vint Cerf at ARPA
   B. Tim Berners-Lee at CERN
   C. Ray Tomlinson at NSF
   D. Marc Andreessen at Netscape
Answer: B. Berners-Lee invented the Web at CERN; browsers like Mosaic then popularised it. (Key point: Origin of the Web)

3. Why is platform independence an important benefit of web technology?
   A. It forces every user to install the same OS
   B. It works only offline
   C. A web application runs in any browser on any OS with no installation, and updates are central
   D. It requires updating each user's computer separately
Answer: C. Browser-based delivery removes installation and allows central updates. (Key point: Platform independence)

4. Which set best describes web technology?
   A. Only the cables and routers of the Internet
   B. Only search engines
   C. Only the TCP/IP protocol suite
   D. Standards and tools such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, HTTP, server-side languages and databases
Answer: D. Web technology is the standards and tools used to build and deliver content over the Web. (Key point: Definition of web technology)
