## Question

Briefly explain the main aspects of Semantic Web.

## Short answer

Main aspects include using URIs for unique identification, XML for syntax, RDF for data modeled as subject-predicate-object triples, and OWL for ontologies. Additional aspects are logic/inference rules, SPARQL querying, intelligent agents, and proof/trust mechanisms.

## Answer

The **Semantic Web** is a vision of the Web where data has explicit meaning so that machines can process it. Its main aspects are:

1. **Machine-understandable data and metadata:** Content is described by metadata (data about data) in standard formats, so software can interpret what a page or resource means.
2. **Unique identification with URIs:** Every resource (person, place, concept) has a unique URI, so data from different sites can be linked without confusion.
3. **XML (syntax):** A common, structured syntax with user-defined tags and namespaces for the data.
4. **RDF (data model):** Describes resources by statements called **triples** (subject, predicate, object), e.g. (Ram, worksFor, TU). RDF Schema adds classes and properties.
5. **Ontologies (OWL):** Formal, shared vocabularies that define concepts and the relationships between them, allowing agreement on meaning (for example "Teacher is a kind of Person").
6. **Logic, inference and rules:** Reasoners deduce new facts from existing ones. Example: if "Ram is father of Hari" and "Hari is father of Shyam", then Ram is grandfather of Shyam.
7. **Query (SPARQL):** A query language to retrieve data from RDF stores.
8. **Intelligent agents:** Programs that use semantic data to do tasks for users, such as booking or comparison.
9. **Proof and trust:** Mechanisms (digital signatures, provenance) to verify the source and correctness of information.
10. **Linked Data and interoperability:** Connecting datasets (like DBpedia) into a global web of data.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why does every resource get a unique URI in the Semantic Web?
   A. To make pages load faster
   B. So data from different sites can be linked without confusion
   C. To hide the resource
   D. To compress data
Answer: B. Unique URIs let data from different sites refer to the same thing unambiguously. (Key point: URIs)

2. What is the role of ontologies (OWL)?
   A. Formal shared vocabularies defining concepts and relationships, e.g. Teacher is a kind of Person
   B. Storing images
   C. Sending emails
   D. Styling pages
Answer: A. Ontologies give agreed meaning through defined concepts and relationships. (Key point: Ontologies)

3. If 'Ram is father of Hari' and 'Hari is father of Shyam', what can a reasoner deduce?
   A. Ram is Shyam's brother
   B. Ram is Shyam's grandfather
   C. Shyam is Ram's father
   D. Nothing can be deduced
Answer: B. Logic and rules let reasoners derive new facts like grandfather from existing ones. (Key point: Inference)

4. What is SPARQL used for?
   A. Querying RDF data
   B. Defining page layout
   C. Encrypting data
   D. Writing XML tags
Answer: A. SPARQL is the query language used to retrieve data from RDF stores. (Key point: SPARQL)
