## Question

Write a short note on Tagging and Folksonomies.

## Short answer

Tags are user-assigned keywords for organizing content. A folksonomy is a user-generated classification system without a fixed hierarchy, enabling easy discovery and trend visualization via tag clouds.

## Answer

#### Tagging
A **tag** is a keyword or label that a user attaches to an item (photo, web page, video, post) to describe it. Tags let content be organised, searched and shared. Sites such as Flickr, Delicious, YouTube, Twitter (hashtags) and Instagram use tagging. A group of tags shown with size according to popularity is a **tag cloud**.

#### Folksonomy
**Folksonomy** (folk + taxonomy) is a classification system created by the collaborative tagging of users, rather than by experts. There is no fixed vocabulary or hierarchy; the categories emerge from the many tags that people choose.

| Basis | Taxonomy | Folksonomy |
|---|---|---|
| Created by | Experts/administrators | Ordinary users |
| Structure | Fixed hierarchy | Flat, free tags |
| Vocabulary | Controlled | Uncontrolled |
| Cost | High | Low |

#### Advantages
- Easy, cheap and flexible; no training required.
- Reflects the language users actually use and adapts quickly to new terms.
- Helps discovery of related content and trends (tag clouds).

#### Disadvantages
- Ambiguous tags (apple), synonyms (car/automobile), plurals and spelling variations.
- No hierarchy; inconsistent and sometimes spammy tags.

Tagging and folksonomy are central Web 2.0 ideas of collective intelligence.
