## Question

What are the difference between Web1.0 and Web2.0?

## Short answer

Web 1.0 was read-only static pages with few content creators; Web 2.0 is read-write, interactive, and user-generated. Web 2.0 uses AJAX, APIs, and social media, while Web 1.0 used basic HTML and one-way communication.

## Answer

**Web 1.0** (about 1991-2003) was the "read-only" web of static pages where a few publishers created content and most users only read it. **Web 2.0** (from about 2004) is the "read-write" or social web where users create, share and collaborate on content.

| Basis | Web 1.0 | Web 2.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Read-only, static | Read-write, dynamic, interactive |
| Content creators | Few webmasters/companies | Users themselves (user-generated content) |
| Interaction | One-way | Two-way, participation and collaboration |
| Technologies | HTML, basic CSS, CGI | AJAX, JavaScript, XML/JSON, RSS, APIs, HTML5 |
| Examples | Early company sites, Britannica Online, early Hotmail | Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia, Blogger, Twitter |
| Organisation of data | Directories, taxonomies | Tagging, folksonomy |
| Software model | Software installed/sold as product | Web as a platform; services (SaaS) |
| Ownership | Content owned by the publisher | Shared, open, community-driven |
| Advertising | Banner ads, page views | Click-based and targeted ads |
| Communication | Email, forums | Blogs, wikis, social networks, podcasts |

Web 2.0 did not change the underlying protocols but changed how people use the Web: from consumers of information to producers and collaborators.
