## Question

Explain the web version in detail and differentiate between Web 2.0 and Web 3.0.

## Short answer

Web2.0 emphasizes user-generated content and social interaction on centralized platforms. Web3.0 focuses on machine-readable data (semantic web) and decentralization via blockchain, enabling intelligent, user-owned applications.

## Answer

#### Web versions
1. **Web 1.0 (about 1991-2003) – read-only web:** Static HTML pages published by a few authors; users only read. Hyperlinks, directories, early search engines. Little interaction.
2. **Web 2.0 (2004 onward) – read-write, social web:** Users create content through blogs, wikis, social networks and video sharing. Uses AJAX, RSS, APIs and cloud services. Platforms are centralised and owned by large companies (Google, Facebook, YouTube).
3. **Web 3.0 – two views:**
   - *Semantic Web (Tim Berners-Lee):* data given machine-readable meaning (RDF, OWL, ontologies) so computers can understand and combine information; intelligent agents and personalised search.
   - *Decentralised web:* blockchain, cryptocurrencies, smart contracts and user-owned data, together with AI and 3D/immersive experiences.
4. **Web 4.0 / Web 5.0 (emerging):** Proposed ideas of an intelligent "symbiotic" web with AI assistants and IoT; not standardised.

Web 1.0       Web 2.0         Web 3.0
read-only --> read-write --> read-write-understand/own
static        social          semantic / decentralised
```
#### Web 2.0 versus Web 3.0
| Basis | Web 2.0 | Web 3.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | User-generated content and social interaction | Meaning of data, intelligence and decentralisation |
| Data | Understood by humans only | Machine-understandable (semantic) |
| Control | Centralised by big companies | Decentralised, user ownership (blockchain) |
| Technology | AJAX, XML, RSS, APIs, cloud | RDF, OWL, AI, blockchain, smart contracts |
| Search | Keyword-based | Context- and meaning-based, personalised |
| Examples | Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia | Ethereum-based apps, semantic search, smart assistants |
## Check yourself
The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.
1. What does the Semantic Web view of Web 3.0 aim for?
   A. Data with machine-readable meaning so computers can understand and combine it
   B. Centralised company control
   C. Faster dial-up connections
   D. A larger number of static pages
   Answer: A. Tim Berners-Lee's semantic web uses RDF and OWL to give data meaning. (Key point: Semantic Web)
2. How does control differ in Web 2.0 and Web 3.0?
   A. Web 2.0 is centralised by big companies; Web 3.0 is decentralised with user ownership
   B. Both are controlled by governments
   C. Web 2.0 is decentralised; Web 3.0 centralised
   D. Both are fully decentralised
   Answer: A. Web 3.0 uses blockchain for decentralisation and ownership. (Key point: Control)
3. How does search differ?
   A. Both keyword
   B. Web 2.0: keyword-based; Web 3.0: context- and meaning-based
   C. Web 2.0: meaning-based; Web 3.0: keyword
   D. Neither supports search
   Answer: B. Web 3.0 search is semantic and personalised. (Key point: Search)
4. Which technologies belong to Web 3.0?
   A. Telnet and Gopher
   B. CGI, plain HTML only
   C. AJAX, RSS only
   D. RDF, OWL, AI, blockchain, smart contracts
   Answer: D. Web 3.0 uses RDF/OWL, AI and blockchain; AJAX and RSS belong to Web 2.0. (Key point: Technologies)
