## Question

Discuss the basic trends in wireless communication beyond 3G, focusing on key technological changes.

## Short answer

Beyond 3G, wireless moved to all-IP broadband using OFDMA, MIMO, a flat architecture, adaptive modulation, small cells, carrier aggregation and network virtualisation. Data rates rose from about 2 Mbps in 3G to 1 Gbps in 4G and 20 Gbps in 5G, with latency falling to a few milliseconds.

## Answer

Beyond 3G, wireless systems moved from voice-centred circuit networks to data-centred, all-IP broadband networks.

#### Key technological trends
1. **OFDM/OFDMA instead of CDMA** – wide channels split into many narrow subcarriers; robust to multipath and easy to scale bandwidth (LTE, WiMAX, Wi-Fi).
2. **MIMO and smart antennas** – multiple antennas for spatial multiplexing and beamforming, growing to massive MIMO in 5G.
3. **All-IP flat architecture** – no separate circuit-switched core; voice as VoIP (VoLTE); fewer network nodes, lower latency.
4. **Higher-order adaptive modulation and coding** – 64/256-QAM, turbo/LDPC codes, HARQ.
5. **Wider bandwidth and carrier aggregation**, use of new bands including mmWave.
6. **Small cells and HetNets** – macro, micro, pico and femto cells, Wi-Fi offloading for capacity.
7. **Software-defined networking and virtualisation (SDN/NFV)**, cloud RAN, network slicing.
8. **Convergence** – fixed, mobile and broadcast services, and machine-type communication (IoT, M2M).
9. **Cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum sharing** to use spectrum more efficiently.

Result: data rates rose from ~2 Mbps (3G) to 1 Gbps (4G) and 20 Gbps (5G), with latency falling to a few ms.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which access technique replaced CDMA in beyond-3G systems?
   A. OFDM/OFDMA
   B. FDMA
   C. Pure TDMA
   D. FM analog
Answer: A. OFDM/OFDMA is robust to multipath and scales bandwidth easily (LTE, WiMAX, Wi-Fi). (Key point: Access technique trend)

2. What does MIMO provide?
   A. Spatial multiplexing for higher rate and diversity for reliability, with beamforming
   B. Lower modulation order
   C. Circuit-switched voice
   D. Fixed 5 MHz channels
Answer: A. Multiple antennas give higher rate and reliability. (Key point: MIMO)

3. What is the purpose of small cells and HetNets?
   A. To remove the need for spectrum
   B. To increase capacity using macro, micro, pico and femto cells and Wi-Fi offloading
   C. To make the architecture circuit switched
   D. To replace MIMO
Answer: B. Layered small cells add capacity where traffic is high. (Key point: HetNets)
