## Question

Write down the specification for stone masonry work in 1:6 mortar.

## Short answer

Stone mansonry with hard durable stone in1:6 cment sand mortar. Stones laid on full bed with filled jointes; through stones at1.5–2 m intervals. Joint thickness ≤20 mm. Curing7 days. Measured in m³.

## Answer

#### Detailed specification: stone masonry in cement sand mortar 1:6

**Scope:** Constructing random rubble/coursed rubble stone masonry in cement sand mortar 1:6 in foundations and walls as per drawings.

**Materials**
- **Stone:** hard, sound, durable, free from cracks, weathering, soft veins and dirt; locally available (e.g. granite, limestone or river boulders), compressive strength not less than 5 N/mm² and water absorption below 5%. Stones are generally not less than 150 mm thick, with a length not more than three times the height. Face stones are dressed to the line; stones are cleaned and wetted before use.
- **Mortar:** cement sand 1:6 by volume, with clean coarse sand, fresh OPC/PPC and potable water, mixed uniformly and used within 30 minutes.

**Workmanship**
- The foundation bed is cleaned and levelled; the first course is laid with the largest stones.
- Stones are laid on their natural bed in a full bed of mortar; joints are fully filled, and spalls (chips) are used to fill the gaps so that no voids remain. The hearting is packed with smaller stones and mortar.
- The stones are laid with **good bond**, and vertical joints are staggered. **Bond (through) stones** are provided at 1.5–2 m intervals in each course. In walls up to 600 mm thick, a through stone runs across the full thickness; in thicker walls, a set of two or more bond stones overlapping each other by at least 150 mm is used.
- Joints are not more than 20 mm thick for rubble work; corners and jambs are built of selected, dressed stones.
- The work is raised evenly, by not more than 1 m per day, and brought to level at about 600 mm height intervals.
- The face is kept plumb, checked with a plumb bob and line.
- Faces to be plastered or pointed are raked 15–20 mm deep while the mortar is green.

**Curing:** Wet curing for at least 7 days, with protection from rain and sun.

**Measurement and payment:** in cubic metres of finished masonry, with no deduction for openings below 0.1 m². The rate includes materials, scaffolding, curing and all labour.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which describes acceptable stone?
   A. Soft and porous with veins
   B. Hard, sound, durable, free from cracks and soft veins, absorption below 5%
   C. Weathered and dirty
   D. Any stone with absorption 25%
Answer: B. Stone must be hard and sound with water absorption below 5%. (Key point: Stone quality)

2. What is the provision for bond (through) stones?
   A. None required
   B. One per 10 m
   C. Only at corners
   D. One at 1.5 m intervals horizontally, at least one per 0.5 m2 of face for walls over 600 mm thick
Answer: D. Bond stones tie the wall thickness together; they are placed at specified intervals. (Key point: Bond stones)

3. How is the hearting (core) of the wall filled?
   A. With loose soil
   B. Packed with smaller stones and mortar, spalls filling gaps without voids
   C. Left hollow
   D. With sand only
Answer: B. Voids are filled with spalls and mortar to give a solid wall. (Key point: Hearting)

4. What is the daily raising limit?
   A. 5 m per day
   B. No limit
   C. 0.1 m per day
   D. 1 m per day
Answer: D. Work is raised evenly to a maximum of 1 m per day. (Key point: Daily height)
