## Question

What are the advantages and disadvantages (merits and demerits) of using equipment in construction? Explain.

## Short answer

Advantages: faster work, higher output, better quality, less labour, handles heavy or risky tasks, greater accuracy. Disadvantages: high initial and operating costs, not economical for small jobs, needs skilled operators, breakdowns cause delays, costly spares, noise and pollution. Equipment suits large, time-bound projects.

## Answer

| Advantages of using equipment | Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| Faster work, so the project finishes sooner | High initial cost or rent, and high operating cost |
| Higher output per day and economical for large quantities | Not economical for small jobs; idle machine costs money |
| Uniform, better quality (compaction, mixing, levelling) | Needs skilled operators, mechanics and a service system |
| Reduces labour cost and dependency on scarce labour | Breakdowns and downtime delay work |
| Does heavy, risky, or impossible manual work (deep excavation, lifting) | Spare parts and fuel are costly; often imported (foreign exchange) |
| Reduces workers' fatigue and accident risk in heavy work | Needs access, working space and good ground conditions |
| Greater accuracy and precision, reduced wastage | May reduce local employment |
| Better planning and predictable output | Depreciation, obsolescence, noise, pollution, and risk of accidents if misused |

Equipment is therefore justified when the quantity of work is large, the time is short, and the work cannot be done economically by hand. In small projects, manual methods may be better.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which advantage of equipment relates to quality?
   A. It increases local employment
   B. It needs skilled operators
   C. Uniform, better quality in compaction, mixing and levelling
   D. It always lowers fuel cost
Answer: C. Machines give uniform, better quality in compaction, mixing and levelling. (Key point: Quality benefit)

2. Which is a disadvantage of using equipment?
   A. Faster work
   B. Reduced worker fatigue
   C. High initial cost or rent and high operating cost
   D. Greater precision
Answer: C. Equipment has high initial or rental cost and high operating cost. (Key point: Cost disadvantage)

3. When is equipment justified over manual work?
   A. Quantity is large, time is short and work cannot be done economically by hand
   B. Skilled operators are not available
   C. The machine will stay idle for long
   D. Quantity of work is small and time is long
Answer: A. Equipment pays off for large quantities, short time and work hard to do economically by hand. (Key point: When justified)
