## Question

Perform earned value analysis of a project with five activities as given below. Progress was evaluated at the end of 5th day.

| Activity | Cost | Planned days (of 1 to 8) |
|---|---|---|
| A | 6,000 | 1-3 |
| B | 15,000 | 2-5 |
| C | 10,000 | 4-6 |
| D | 4,000 | 7-8 |

[Figure: bar chart with shaded cells showing the planned days; read from the scan, may be off by a day. Only four activities (A to D) appear in the printed table.]

| At the end of 5th day | % Complete | Actual Cost |
|---|---|---|
| A | 100% | 7000 |
| B | 55% | 7500 |
| C | 40% | 3600 |
| D | 0% | x |

Also comment on the performances.

## Short answer

PV = Rs 27,667; EV = Rs 18,250; AC = Rs 18,100; CV = +Rs 150; SV = −Rs 9,417; CPI = 1.01; SPI = 0.66; EAC ≈ Rs 34,712. Cost is slightly favorable but schedule is seriously behind; only 66% of planned work done. Acceleration is needed.

## Answer

**Assumptions:** the cost of each activity is spread uniformly over its planned days (read from the bar chart). Review at the end of day 5. BAC = 6,000 + 15,000 + 10,000 + 4,000 = Rs 35,000.

#### Planned value at end of day 5
| Activity | Cost | Planned days | Days planned done | PV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 6,000 | 1-3 (3 days) | 3 of 3 | 6,000 |
| B | 15,000 | 2-5 (4 days) | 4 of 4 | 15,000 |
| C | 10,000 | 4-6 (3 days) | 2 of 3 | 6,667 |
| D | 4,000 | 7-8 | 0 | 0 |
| **Total** | **35,000** | | | **27,667** |

#### Earned value and actual cost
| Activity | % | EV | AC |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 100 | 6,000 | 7,000 |
| B | 55 | 8,250 | 7,500 |
| C | 40 | 4,000 | 3,600 |
| D | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| **Total** | | **18,250** | **18,100** |

#### Results
$$
\begin{aligned}
CV &= EV - AC = 18{,}250 - 18{,}100 = +150 \\
SV &= EV - PV = 18{,}250 - 27{,}667 = -9{,}417 \\
CPI &= 18{,}250/18{,}100 = 1.008 \\
SPI &= 18{,}250/27{,}667 = 0.660 \\
EAC &= 35{,}000/1.008 = 34{,}712
\end{aligned}
$$

**Answer:** PV = Rs 27,667; EV = Rs 18,250; AC = Rs 18,100; CV = +Rs 150; SV = −Rs 9,417; CPI = 1.01; SPI = 0.66.

**Comment:** Cost performance is fine, with a small saving of Rs 150 and CPI slightly above 1 (on A the cost is over, but B and C are under). However, the project is seriously behind schedule: only 66% of the planned work is done. Activity B (55% against 100% planned) and C (40% against 67%) are late. Since the cost is under control but time is not, the management should add resources or crews to B and C, or the following activity D will be delayed and the project will finish late.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Activity C costs 10,000 over days 4-6. Its PV at the end of day 5 is:
   A. 10,000
   B. 6,667
   C. 4,000
   D. 3,600
Answer: B. Two of three days are planned done: 2/3 x 10,000 = 6,667. (Key point: PV of C)

2. Total EV from A (100%, 6,000), B (55%, 15,000) and C (40%, 10,000) is:
   A. 27,667
   B. 18,250
   C. 18,100
   D. 31,000
   Answer: B. 6,000 + 8,250 + 4,000 = 18,250. (Key point: Total EV)

3. With EV 18,250, AC 18,100 and PV 27,667, the project is:
   A. Over budget and ahead
   B. Slightly under budget (CV +150) but seriously behind schedule (SPI 0.66)
   C. On schedule
   D. Over budget and on schedule
   Answer: B. CV = +150, SV = -9,417, SPI = 0.66. (Key point: Cost vs schedule)

4. What action is suggested?
   A. Reduce crews
   B. Add resources to B and C or D will be delayed
   C. Stop the project
   D. Ignore the delay
Answer: B. Schedule is the problem, so add crews on late activities B and C. (Key point: Corrective action)
