## Question

What are the various equipment used for excavation and earth moving works? List them and explain any two with proper sketches.

## Short answer

Excavation equipment includes bulldozer, scraper, power shovel, backhoe, dragline, clamshell, loader, grader, trucks and trenchers. Bulldozer pushes soil with a front blade over short distances. Backhoe digs below ground using a boom, stick and bucket, rotating 360 degrees.

#### 1. Bulldozer

A crawler tractor with a front blade (straight, angle or U type) that pushes, cuts and spreads soil over short distances (up to about 100 m). It is used for clearing, opening roads and levelling; the blade can be raised, lowered or tilted by hydraulic rams.

#### 2. Backhoe (hydraulic excavator)

The excavator has a boom, a stick and a bucket that digs by pulling toward the machine. It excavates below ground level for trenches, foundations and basements, and loads trucks. It can rotate through 360 degrees, and bucket sizes of 0.3-2 m$^3$ are common.
