## Question

Draw a line diagram of front-end loader and dragline and explain their functions in details.

## Short answer

A front-end loader is a tractor with a hydraulic front bucket that scoops, lifts, carries and dumps loose material; it loads trucks, stockpiles and backfills. A dragline has a bucket hung from a boom by hoist rope and pulled by drag rope; it digs below track level for soft soil, dredging and long-reach work.

## Answer

#### Front-end loader
**Front-end loader:** a wheeled or tracked tractor with a hydraulic bucket at the front that scoops, lifts, carries and dumps loose material.

```text
        arm
     ___/\____
    /   \    \__
   | cab|  ====\___bucket
   |____|__
  (O)======(O)   wheels / tracks
```
- Parts: tractor, lift arms, tilt linkage, bucket, hydraulic rams.
- Operation: the loader digs into a pile by driving forward, tilts the bucket back, lifts, carries to the truck and dumps.
- Uses: loading trucks and hoppers, stockpiling, short-haul carrying, light excavating, cleaning, and backfilling.

#### Dragline
**Dragline:** an excavator whose bucket hangs from a boom by hoist rope and is pulled toward the machine by a drag rope. It digs below the machine level and works at a distance from its own tracks.

```text
        boom
         /\
        /  \   hoist rope
   cab /____\    |
  ____|______|   v
  [==tracks==]   \__bucket-->(drag rope pulls bucket in)
```
- Parts: crawler base, cab/rotating deck, long boom, hoist rope, drag rope, bucket.
- Operation: the bucket is thrown out, dragged to fill, hoisted, swung and dumped.
- Uses: soft soil, sand, wet ground, canal and drain cleaning, underwater and river dredging, long reach digging and stockpiling.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What does a front-end loader do?
   A. Digs deep shafts
   B. Fine grades
   C. Bores tunnels
   D. Scoops, lifts, carries and dumps loose material
   Answer: D. It loads, carries short distances and dumps loose material. (Key point: Loader use)

2. What is the loader's operation sequence?
   A. Rotate cutter head
   B. Spray bitumen
   C. Drive into pile, tilt bucket back, lift, carry, dump
   D. Throw bucket and drag
   Answer: C. It digs by driving forward, tilts back, lifts, carries and dumps. (Key point: Loader operation)

3. How is the dragline bucket filled?
   A. Rotated by cutters
   B. Pushed forward by hydraulic arm
   C. Thrown out and dragged toward the machine by the drag rope
   D. Pulled by a crane hook only
   Answer: C. The bucket hangs from hoist rope and the drag rope pulls it in. (Key point: Dragline bucket)

4. Where is a dragline best used?
   A. Hard rock above machine level
   B. Soft soil, wet ground, dredging and long reach digging
   C. Fine grading
   D. Compaction
   Answer: B. Draglines suit soft soil, wet ground, dredging and long reach. (Key point: Dragline use)
