## Question

Prepare a job lay-out plan for constructing 1000 sqm area public building in a rectangular land (190 m × 125 m) with sufficient facilities.

## Short answer

Place the 1000 m² building centrally on the 190 m × 125 m plot with a loop road and gates on the front side. Locate office, stores, yards, mixer, water tank and hoist near the building; put labour camp, canteen, toilets, first aid, parking, generator and security on the sides. Keep remaining area for finishing and landscaping.

## Answer

**Assumptions:** the 1000 m² public building (say 2–3 storeys, plinth about 400 m²) is built in the middle of a 190 m × 125 m plot, the access road runs along one 190 m (front) side, and the RCC frame is built using a mixer and a hoist or small tower crane.

#### Layout plan (not to scale)
```text
                       190 m
 +--------------------------------------------+
 | Labour camp   Toilets   Canteen  First aid |
 |                                            |
 | Steel yard    Carpentry    Bar-bending     |  125 m
 |                                            |
 | Sand/agg.     +------------+  Cement store |
 | stacks        |  BUILDING  |  Mixer/batch  |
 | Brick yard    |  (1000 m2) |  Water tank   |
 |               +------------+               |
 | Parking       Fire point      Generator    |
 | Site office   Security     Test lab corner |
 +---------[ Main gate ]--[ Material gate ]---+
             Access road (190 m side)
```

#### Facilities provided
- **Gates and roads:** separate main gate and material gate; a 4–5 m wide haul road in a loop around the building, one-way if possible.
- **Site office** near the gate, with space for drawings and meetings, a store for site records, and a small lab corner for cube and slump tests.
- **Stores:** a closed cement store (raised floor, near the mixer), a general store for tools, fittings and paint, and a steel yard with a covered area.
- **Stacking yards:** sand, aggregate and bricks on firm ground near the mixer and hoist, with drainage.
- **Workshops:** carpentry and shuttering yard, bar-bending yard.
- **Mixer / batching plant, water tank** and curing point near the building, within the crane's reach.
- **Labour camp, canteen, toilets and first aid** on one side, away from the dust and noise.
- **Services:** temporary electricity with a generator, a bore or tank water supply, drainage and sewerage.
- **Safety and security:** boundary fence, fire extinguishers and sand buckets, a watchman, helmets and sign boards.
- **Parking** for visitors and vehicles, and an assembly point for emergencies.
- **Space for future work:** the remaining area is kept free for later finishing and landscaping.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What gate and road arrangement is suggested for the 1000 m2 building site?
   A. One common gate and no internal road
   B. Separate main and material gates with a 4-5 m haul road looped around the building
   C. A gate on each of four sides with a 10 m road
   D. Only a footpath for workers
   Answer: B. Separate gates and a loop haul road (one-way if possible) give smooth traffic. (Key point: Gates and roads)

2. How should the cement store be provided?
   A. Open stack near the road
   B. Closed store with a raised floor, near the mixer
   C. Under a tree near the camp
   D. Inside the labour shed
   Answer: B. Cement needs protection from moisture, so a closed store with a raised floor, close to the mixer. (Key point: Cement store)

3. Where are the labour camp, canteen and toilets placed?
   A. Beside the mixer
   B. On one side away from dust and noise
   C. In front of the main gate
   D. Inside the building footprint
   Answer: B. They are grouped on one side, away from dust and noise of the work. (Key point: Placement of labour facilities)

4. Where are the mixer/batching plant and water tank placed?
   A. Near the building within crane reach
   B. Next to the site office at the gate
   C. At the far corner of the plot
   D. On the road outside
   Answer: A. They are near the building, within crane reach, with a curing point. (Key point: Mixer and equipment)
