## Question

Write a short note on the importance of quality control.

## Short answer

Quality control through inspections and tests ensures work meets specifications, which is vital for safety, durability, and cost savings by avoiding rework. It improves client satisfaction, reduces disputes, ensures code compliance, and protects the contractor's reputation.

## Answer

**Quality control (QC)** is the set of inspections, tests and checks that make sure construction work meets the specifications, drawings and codes. It is very important because:

1. **Safety:** weak concrete, poor steel or bad workmanship can cause failure of the structure and loss of life, as the lessons from earthquakes such as Gorkha 2015 show.
2. **Durability and life:** good materials and workmanship give a longer life with less maintenance.
3. **Economy:** it avoids rework, demolition, repairs and wastage; the cost of preventing defects is much lower than the cost of correcting them later.
4. **Client satisfaction and reputation:** the contractor gets repeat work and the owner gets a usable building.
5. **Contract compliance:** the work follows the specifications and codes (NBC, IS), so payment is not withheld and there are fewer disputes.
6. **Time:** fewer defects mean fewer delays and a smooth handover.
7. **Legal protection:** it reduces the contractor's liability during the defect liability period.
8. **Uniformity:** the same standard is kept in all parts of the work.

QC is carried out by testing materials (cement, aggregates, steel, bricks), checking mixes and cube strength, inspecting each stage before it is covered (foundation, reinforcement), and keeping test records.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Quality control consists of:
   A. Inspections, tests and checks to ensure work meets specifications, drawings and codes
   B. Only the final inspection
   C. Only the billing
   D. Hiring workers
Answer: A. QC verifies that work conforms to specification and codes. (Key point: Meaning)

2. Why is QC economical?
   A. Cost of preventing defects is much lower than correcting them later
   B. It increases rework
   C. It adds wastage
   D. It delays handover
Answer: A. Preventing defects avoids rework, demolition and repair. (Key point: Economy)

3. Why is QC important for safety?
   A. Weak concrete or poor workmanship can cause failure and loss of life
   B. It improves colour
   C. It reduces taxes
   D. It lowers rent
Answer: A. Poor materials and workmanship can cause structural failure, as shown in Gorkha 2015. (Key point: Safety)
