## Question

Write a short note on road pavers.

## Short answer

A road paver is a self-propelled machine that lays and partly compacts hot mix using a hopper, conveyors, augers and a vibrating heated screed. It produces uniform width, thickness, camber and level; rollers compact immediately. Crawler and wheeled types exist, including asphalt and slip-form concrete pavers.

## Answer

A **road paver (finisher)** is a self-propelled machine that lays, spreads and partly compacts bituminous mix (or concrete in the slip-form type) to the required width, thickness, camber and level.

```text
 truck->[hopper]==conveyor==[auger]--[screed]
         tracks or wheels      spreads  vibrates & levels
```
- **Parts:** receiving hopper, feeder conveyors, augers, tamper bar, vibrating and heated screed, levelling sensors, tracks or rubber tyres, operator platform.
- **Working:** tipper trucks unload hot mix (130-160 degrees C) into the hopper; the conveyor carries it to the augers, which spread it; the screed floats on the mix, and gives a uniform mat of the set thickness. Rollers follow at once.
- **Types:** crawler and wheeled pavers; asphalt pavers; concrete slip-form pavers.
- **Advantages:** uniform thickness and riding quality, high output, and less labour.
- **Care:** continuous feed of material, steady speed, and correct temperature to avoid segregation and cold joints.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What does a paver do?
   A. Excavates
   B. Hauls
   C. Lays, spreads and partly compacts the mix to width, thickness, camber and level
   D. Mixes bitumen
   Answer: C. A paver spreads and lightly compacts the mat. (Key point: Paver purpose)

2. What temperature is hot mix delivered at?
   A. 0 degrees C
   B. 130-160 degrees C
   C. 20-30 degrees C
   D. 300-400 degrees C
   Answer: B. Hot mix is 130-160 degrees C. (Key point: Hot mix temperature)

3. What avoids segregation and cold joints?
   A. Continuous feed, steady speed and correct temperature
   B. Frequent stops
   C. Cold mix
   D. Fast random speed
   Answer: A. These care points avoid segregation and cold joints. (Key point: Care)
