## Question

Explain engineering morals, ethics and professionalism.

## Short answer

Engineering morals are personal values of right and wrong applied to practice, like honesty and safety. Engineering ethics is the study and codified rules guiding engineers' conduct. Professionalism is the competent, honest, and responsible practice that expresses both morals and ethics.

## Answer

#### Engineering morals
Morals are the beliefs and values of what is right and wrong held by individuals or groups. Engineering morals are the moral values, issues and duties found in engineering practice, such as honesty, safety, responsibility, respect for life and environment, and fairness. They cover (a) moral habits and character of engineers, (b) the moral problems in engineering work, and (c) the justification of moral judgements in the field.

#### Engineering ethics
Engineering ethics is the study of moral problems and decisions of engineers, and the set of rules (code of ethics) that govern their conduct. It has three senses:
- **Descriptive:** what engineers actually do and believe.
- **Normative:** what they ought to do, the moral principles and duties.
- **Study of moral issues:** safety, risk, conflict of interest, confidentiality, whistle blowing, bribery, environmental duty, and responsibilities to employer, clients, colleagues and public.

Aims: to develop moral awareness, reasoning, commitment and the ability to resolve dilemmas.

#### Professionalism
Professionalism is the conduct, aims and qualities that characterise a professional: competence, integrity, responsibility, accountability, commitment to public welfare, continuous learning, punctuality, respect for clients and colleagues, and compliance with the code of conduct and laws. It also means pride in work and putting service above personal profit.

#### Relation
| Concept | Meaning | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Morals | Personal values of right and wrong | Family, society, religion |
| Ethics | Systematic rules/study for a group or profession | Codes, philosophy |
| Professionalism | Practising skill with ethics and responsibility | Training, Council, workplace |

Morals form the base, ethics gives written guidance, and professionalism is their practical expression by the engineer. Together they preserve public trust in engineers.
