## Question

Write the (general) job description of a freshly graduated engineer working in the public sector (and private sector).

## Short answer

A fresh engineer in the public sector surveys data, assists in design and estimates, prepares tender documents, supervises construction, checks quality, and maintains records and reports. In the private sector, a junior engineer prepares designs, does site supervision, quality control, proposals, and learns software and standards. Both must register with NEC, follow ethics, and seek mentorship.

## Answer

A fresh engineering graduate begins as a junior who works under supervision, learns the practice and gradually takes on responsibility. The duties depend on the sector.

#### Public sector (e.g. Nepal Engineering Service, as Assistant Engineer / Computer Engineer after Public Service Commission selection)
1. Survey, investigation and collection of field or system data.
2. Assist in planning, design, drawing and cost estimates, or in software/system analysis and design.
3. Prepare tender documents and assist in bid evaluation under the Public Procurement Act 2063.
4. Supervise construction/implementation, check the quality of materials and work, and maintain site records (measurement book, daily diary).
5. Prepare bills and progress and technical reports; check contractors' bills.
6. Operate and maintain facilities, networks and IT systems; support e-governance.
7. Coordinate with users, contractors and local bodies; follow office rules and the orders of seniors.
8. Maintain files and carry out other tasks assigned by the head of office.

#### Private sector (consulting firm, contractor, industry, IT company)
1. Work as a trainee or junior engineer under senior engineers.
2. Prepare designs, drawings, models, quantity take-offs and rate analyses; or develop, test and debug software and write documentation.
3. Site supervision, quality control, material testing and daily reports.
4. Assist in proposals, bidding and client communication.
5. Learn to use software, standards, tools and safety practices.
6. Meet deadlines and budgets, and work as part of a team.
7. Follow company policy and the code of conduct.

In both sectors the fresh engineer should stay honest, learn continuously, register with the Nepal Engineering Council and seek mentorship.
