## Question

Describe the role of Analytical Modeling in DSS. What are the differences between Management Information System (MIS) and Executive Support System (ESS)?

## Short answer

Analytical modeling uses mathematical, statistical and logical models in a DSS for what-if analysis, sensitivity, optimization, forecasting and simulation. MIS serves middle managers with structured decisions and routine fixed reports. ESS serves executives with unstructured strategic decisions, interactive dashboards, drill-down, KPIs and external information.

## Answer

#### Role of analytical modeling in DSS
**Analytical modeling** means using mathematical, statistical and logical models to represent a decision problem and analyse alternatives. The **model base** is the core of a DSS.

Roles:
1. **Represent real situations** in a simplified form (cost, demand, production models).
2. **What-if analysis** - change inputs (price, demand) and see the effect on profit.
3. **Sensitivity and goal-seeking analysis** - find which variable matters, or what input is needed for a target.
4. **Optimisation** - linear programming for best resource use, transport or scheduling.
5. **Forecasting** - regression, time series for sales or demand prediction.
6. **Simulation** - Monte Carlo and risk analysis under uncertainty.
7. **Decision analysis** - decision trees, ranking of alternatives, expected value.
8. **Reduce uncertainty and bias**, giving consistent, faster and better-supported decisions.

Model types: financial, optimisation, simulation, statistical, forecasting.

#### MIS vs ESS

| Basis | MIS | ESS |
|---|---|---|
| Users | Middle managers | Senior executives |
| Decisions | Structured, operational/tactical | Unstructured, strategic |
| Output | Routine, fixed summary and exception reports | Graphical, interactive dashboards with drill-down |
| Data | Mostly internal | Internal plus external (market, competition) |
| Time horizon | Short to medium term | Long term |
| Detail | Moderately detailed | Highly summarised, with option to drill |
| Flexibility | Low | High, ad hoc |
| Analysis | Little | Trend, forecasting, KPIs |
| Example | Monthly sales report | CEO dashboard on market share |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. In a DSS, which component is described as the core that holds the analytical models?
   A. Database
   B. Model base
   C. User interface
   D. Report generator
Answer: B. The answer states that the model base is the core of a DSS, holding the mathematical, statistical and logical models. (Key point: Model base)

2. A manager changes the price and demand inputs to see the effect on profit. Which role of analytical modeling is this?
   A. Forecasting
   B. Optimisation
   C. What-if analysis
   D. Decision tree ranking
Answer: C. What-if analysis means changing inputs such as price or demand and observing the effect on the outcome. (Key point: What-if analysis)

3. Which pair correctly matches MIS and ESS?
   A. MIS: senior executives, strategic; ESS: middle managers, operational
   B. MIS: middle managers, structured operational/tactical; ESS: senior executives, unstructured strategic
   C. Both serve middle managers but ESS uses internal data only
   D. MIS: unstructured decisions; ESS: structured decisions
Answer: B. MIS serves middle managers with structured operational/tactical decisions; ESS serves senior executives with unstructured strategic decisions. (Key point: MIS vs ESS users and decisions)

4. Which is a characteristic of ESS rather than MIS?
   A. Routine fixed exception reports from mostly internal data
   B. Low flexibility with short-term horizon
   C. Interactive graphical dashboards with drill-down using internal and external data
   D. Moderately detailed monthly sales reports
Answer: C. ESS gives graphical, interactive dashboards with drill-down and combines internal data with external data such as market and competition. (Key point: ESS output and data)
