## Question

Prepare a note on intelligent agents with listing of minimum requirement versus the specific requirements to be called in as intelligent agent for any software code piece. Justify your answer with sample example.

## Short answer

Minimum requirements for an agent are autonomy, perception, action and goal-directed behaviour. To be intelligent it must also be reactive, proactive, social, learning and capable of reasoning. An email filtering agent perceives mail, acts, reacts, learns from user marks and interacts with other agents.

## Answer

#### Intelligent agents
An **intelligent agent** is a software program that senses its environment through inputs, makes decisions, and performs actions autonomously to meet goals, possibly learning from experience.

```text
 Environment --percepts--> [ AGENT ] --actions--> Environment
                           (reasoning, goals)
```

#### Minimum requirement vs specific requirements
Not every program is an agent. A piece of code must meet a **minimum requirement** to be an agent, and **specific (intelligence) requirements** to be called intelligent.

| Level | Properties |
|---|---|
| **Minimum (basic agent)** | **Autonomy** - runs without constant human control; **Perception** - senses the environment (input, events); **Action** - acts on the environment / user; **Goal-directed** behaviour |
| **Specific (intelligent)** | **Reactivity** - responds in time to changes; **Proactiveness** - takes initiative to achieve goals; **Social ability** - communicates with users and other agents; **Learning/adaptivity** - improves from experience; **Reasoning** (rules, inference) and knowledge base; **Mobility** (optional) - moves across networks; **Rationality**, **persistence** and **veracity** |

A simple scheduled script that copies files only has autonomy and action, so it is just a program. A program that senses and decides is an agent. One that also learns and plans is an intelligent agent.

#### Example: email filtering agent
- **Perceives** each incoming email (sender, subject, content).
- **Acts** by moving mail to spam, inbox or priority folders (autonomous, runs in background).
- **Reactive** - classifies messages as soon as they arrive.
- **Proactive** - alerts the user to an urgent message or unsubscribe suggestions.
- **Learning** - when the user marks a message as spam, it updates its model.
- **Social** - interacts with the user and with a calendar agent to add meeting events.

Another example: a shopping agent that watches product prices and buys when the price falls below a limit.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which set is the minimum for a basic agent?
   A. Learning, mobility and rationality
   B. Social ability and veracity only
   C. Only a user interface
   D. Autonomy, perception, action and goal-directed behaviour
   Answer: D. Basic agent needs autonomy, perception, action and goals; others make it intelligent. (Key point: Minimum requirements)

2. Why is a scheduled file-copy script not an agent?
   A. It has only autonomy and action; it does not sense and decide
   B. It is too fast
   C. It uses a database
   D. It has a GUI
   Answer: A. It lacks perception and decision. (Key point: Scheduled script)

3. Which property is a specific requirement for intelligence?
   A. Autonomy alone
   B. Learning/adaptivity, reactivity, proactiveness and social ability
   C. Printing ability
   D. Large file size
   Answer: B. Intelligent agents add reactivity, proactiveness, social ability, learning and reasoning. (Key point: Intelligent requirement)

4. In the email filter example, which behavior is proactive?
   A. Classifying a message as soon as it arrives
   B. Updating the model after spam marking
   C. Alerting the user to an urgent message or suggesting unsubscribing
   D. Moving mail to spam
   Answer: C. Proactive means taking initiative; classifying on arrival is reactive. (Key point: Proactive)

5. In the email agent, what shows learning?
   A. Moving mail to folders
   B. Reading sender
   C. Syncing calendars
   D. Updating its model when the user marks a message as spam
   Answer: D. Learning improves from feedback. (Key point: Learning)
