## Question

Why Information Retrieval (IR) is considered as important in cloud unlike less important in other standalone and local IS? Justify your answer with IR scopes and significance in within these two types of settings.

## Short answer

IR is crucial in cloud because huge, distributed data makes browsing impossible, requiring search with indexing and ranking for usability, analytics, and compliance. In standalone systems, small data allows folder navigation, so IR is less important.

## Answer

**Information retrieval (IR)** is the process of finding relevant documents or information from a large collection to satisfy a user's information need, for example a search for files, e-mails or web pages.

#### IR in standalone / local information systems
- **Scope:** a limited amount of data stored in one place (a local database, a file system or a departmental application).
- **Data:** structured and well known; users know where data are kept.
- **Access:** folders, menus, simple queries or SQL are enough.
- **Significance:** less important, because the volume is small, and users can find items by browsing or directory structure.

#### IR in cloud
- **Scope:** very large volumes of structured and unstructured data (documents, mail, logs, images, social data) distributed across many servers, data centres and users.
- **Data:** continuously growing, in many formats, shared by many tenants.
- **Access:** users cannot browse; they depend on search, indexing and ranking to find data.
- **Significance:**
  1. Finding the right item among billions of objects is only possible with indexing and search.
  2. Cloud storage services (Drive, OneDrive, S3) and SaaS apps need search for usability.
  3. Big data analytics, e-discovery and compliance require retrieving specific data.
  4. Distributed IR, using MapReduce/Hadoop for index building, gives speed and scalability.
  5. It reduces cost and bandwidth by retrieving only the relevant data.
  6. Supports personalised, ranked and secure (permission-aware) retrieval.
  7. Needed for ads, recommendation, and multi-language search.

| Point | Local IS | Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Data size | Small | Huge, distributed |
| Navigation | Browse by folders | Search is the main way |
| Importance of IR | Low | Very high |
| Techniques | Simple queries | Distributed indexing, ranking, relevance |
| Challenges | Few | Scale, latency, security, multi-tenancy |

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is information retrieval?
   A. Finding relevant documents or information from a large collection to satisfy a user's need
   B. Storing data in backups
   C. Encrypting files
   D. Copying files between servers
Answer: A. IR matches a user's information need with documents. (Key point: Meaning of IR)

2. Why is IR less important in standalone or local IS?
   A. Because they have no data
   B. Because search is impossible
   C. Because data is unstructured and huge
   D. Data volume is small and users can find items by browsing folders
Answer: D. Folders, menus and SQL are enough there. (Key point: Local IS)

3. Why is IR vital in the cloud?
   A. Cloud has little data
   B. Cloud has only structured data
   C. Users cannot browse billions of objects and depend on indexing, search and ranking
   D. Cloud users all know file locations
Answer: C. Search becomes the main way to find data. (Key point: Cloud scale)

4. What helps build indexes at cloud scale?
   A. A single desktop
   B. Distributed processing such as MapReduce/Hadoop
   C. Manual sorting
   D. Floppy disks
Answer: B. It gives speed and scalability. (Key point: Distributed IR)
